The Creole Tomato Festival in New Orleans starts tomorrow and I’m happy to say that the report was issued this morning giving those tomatoes the green light. I’m working on local stores to see if we can get some shipped in–let me tell you, no tomato compares. The first time I ate one, it was like I was tasting a tomato for the first time. When I can get them, I don’t eat any other kind. Keep your fingers crossed!
So what are you doing without your slicers? Frankly, I’m not missing them since I was buying on-the-vine or grape tomatoes–still a little early for good local ones.
Love the picture, by the way. I never leave Louisiana (in season) without a box about this size full of those gems.

I normally buy on-the-vine tomatoes at the grocery store and only switch to beefsteak tomatoes when I see local farmers selling them fresh from carts or trucks by the roadside. Hopefully that will keep me salmonella-free for the foreseeable future.

I like the beefsteak ones, and they were just getting good this year… I bought a bunch of colorful peppers to cheer up my salads instead. For some reason grape tomatoes just don’t do it for me, the texture doesn’t hit the same spot.

Those little containers of grape tomatoes that Kroger was selling last month were fantastic. I can’t remember the name, but they were in a cute little yellow and clear domed container. I definitely recommend those. The Ripley tomatoes are always the highlight of my year. I just about buy Kroger out of those as soon as they get them in.

I already miss them! The tomatoes are an essential part of my meals.
I just love microwaving a slice of tomato or half a tomato and melting cheese on it
I even eat tomatoes as a side in a dinner meal.
Just last night, I just ate out a salad at one of those Roadhouse restaurants minus tomatoes, and it was very very strange.
I also love the sliced stewed tomatoes sold in Kroger and in Schnucks under each store’s brand. These are not whole stewed, but sliced stewed tomatoes. I used them in the winter on sandwiches and salads as a cheaper alternative to the winter high priced sliced tomatoes.
I live in Rural West Tennessee, living in rural west Tennessee, its easy to buy home grown. On a rural road, a farmer will set out a table at the end of his driveway. along with the tomatoes on the table, a scale, grocery bags and a bucket for the money. You just stop and fill up a grocer bag with tomatoes, weigh them and then leave the money in the bucket. Its all on the honor system and one can get fresh out of the garden tomatoes.

I bought tomatoes on the vine at Kroger yesterday & there is a label on them saying they were grown in the US w/o pesticides. They are on special for $1.79/lb. this wk.
Easy Way had LA Creole tomatoes one yr. & I got hooked on them but haven’t seen them there since. I think people must not have known what they were looking at because they weren’t as well known back then & they were a dark almost purple color.
My friend in the D/FW area wrote that they were told tomatoes on the vine were OK & anything smaller than a Roma was safe. They are being steered away from a size larger than a Roma due to the salmonella scare. But I’m with Amy - the Ripley tomatoes should be out soon & those are the ones I look forward to every year. Easy Way & Schnucks w/have them too, Amy. I usually buy one to try & then if they’re good I’ll go back for more.
