Last night I met up with a couple of foodie friends and we started our search for the perfect nachos in Memphis. (They got a jump start on me a few weeks ago, beginning with a plate they described as “glumpy mess” at Huey’s on Poplar at Erin Drive, but last night was my first time out).
We’d planned to go to Belmont, but one of the group had a coupon for Cozymel’s, so we went there. The nachos made a pretty picture, but they ended up with six thumbs down. First, a certain amount of goop is necessary for good nachos, and these were too dry. Plus, they were composed, and we want our nachos diggable. Further, they were on baked flour tortillas, not on corn tortillas.
I remember that R.P. Tracks used to have good nachos, so that’s on our list. And Belmont, which my friend Susie remembers served up a nice dish. We’re talking back in the day here, but we’re hoping both are still good. Where else should we go?

The BBQ nachos at Central BBQ. Two kinds of cheese– shredded and melted– great pulled ‘cue, jalapenos, and very sturdy chips. Not to be missed.

Hi Jennifer,
I have always liked Molly LaCasita’s salsa, and I also like their 7 layer dip (not sure it is called dip there, but 7 layer something.) I can’t recall if their nachos are the best, but it would be fun to try them for your experiment.
I used to love Chili’s chicken nachos. No longer on the menu but they will make them if you ask. They are also the flour tortilla kind, so that may be something you don’t care to try.

Molly’s has great nachos. I also really like Chili’s nachos. (I’m glad someone else mentioned them because I was embarrassed to mention Chili’s.) Moe’s also has great nachos.

La Hacienda on G’town has fantastic Chicken fajita nachos. Their salsa has this flavor like no other. White (!!!) cheese as well.

I like composed nachos better than the diggable ones! I always end up with too much topping and not enough chips………
Cafe Espresso used to have great nachos-truly!

The fajita nachos at Margarita’s in West Memphis are excellent, and they will do a steak/chicken mix upon request. Loaded with white cheese, veggies, and tender grilled meat….all other nachos pale by comparison!

To Amy: Don’t be embarassed of Chili’s!
I like it occasionally. The main thing there that is annoying is beer in a plastic mug…ick! Even root beer would taste wrong in a plastic mug.

I have a real weakness for the beef and bean nachos at El Porton. They get soggy, but that’s what the extra chips are for! They are probably too plain for most people, but that’s what I like about them.
For non-Mexican nachos, I have to agree with Chip. (And not just because I’m married to him.) Central BBQ nachos are not to be missed!

El Molino’s at 6494 Summer Avenue has the best nachos around. They have several different kinds and you can get them any way you want.

Probably the best in terms of chip-nacho-topping balance is Swanky’s Taco Shop. As a bonus, they’re built to order so you can customize.

I was on a BBQ nachos kick for awhile & have settled on Jack’s Bar-B-Q Rib Shack as the best. As I told the server, junk food just doesn’t get any better than this. She said they experimented for a long time to come up with the right combination & they were all sick of nachos by then. But they definitely came up with a hit. The nachos have squiggles of sour cream & chopped tomato on them in addition to just the right amount of BBQ sauce, chopped green onions & cheese. You can get them with or without jalapenos.

Recently I got to take some out-of-town business associates to Beale Street for a few hours, and we started out for cocktails at Silky O’Sullivans. The BBQ brisket nachos were a big hit with everyone.

I’m not saying I won’t give them a try–I promise I will–but I am no fan of the barbecue nachos. And everyone sit down for this one: I don’t like barbecue pizza, either.
But note that until recently, I also found barbecue spaghetti an abomination…

Here’s a second vote for El Molino’s. They have a combo with beef, chicken, and beans that is a huge, gooey, and delicious…. (Nothing composed about these.)

El Mezcal, the Fajita Nachos! Chicken, beef or veggie nachos are great, huge portion super cheap. One question though? I’ve lived in several cities but Memphis Loves Mexican food, whats the deal? Dont get me wrong it’s my choice also, but it’s a real big deal here in the Bluff City.

I know these aren’t typical - but Memphis Sports Pub’s Tater Tot Nachos are the best of both worlds.

BenVaughn, for a long time Memphis didn’t really have a lot of good ethnic food available. Some of the first Mexican chain restaurants were the only ones around. Everybody schlepped over to Pancho’s in W. Memphis like it was a big deal. We grew up on Southern fried food & I guess it was just a natural progression to South of the Border fried food. I have become a huge cilantro fan but it took eating Mexican food in Washington, DC, to realize what it was that captured the flavor I was looking for. I think Mexican restaurants here have come a long way & now it’s fun to try them all & compare what’s best where. And now that cilantro & other Mexican ingredients are readily available, people are cooking it more at home too. That’s one of the beauties of this blog - finding out what to get, where to find it, & whose is best.

Great response Carole H, I enjoy the blog, Ive really only been reading for a few weeks since speaking with Jennifer, but I know there are many people that share the same interests I do my work and my hobby are cooking so I am one of the lucky ones.
