Oh, golly!!! A toss-up (pun intended) between Broadway Pizza and Memphis Pizza Cafe…I sense a taste test in my future!!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:14 am
With this one I’ve got to go with Little Italy’s stuffed pizza. Both the veggie and meat are amazing and so packed that one slice can be a meal.

Fox Ridge Pizza. It is one of the few reasons I will drive into Cordova.

I ADORE Exline’ss. Here I am in San Francisco, and I still miss Exline’s. Whenever I go home to visit, my parents have to get an Around the World with Topping.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:13 am
I am going to have to say Memphis Pizza Cafe. I love it and now I find myself comparing any other pizza to theirs! They have a lot of variety.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:18 am
Kristie L- What’s up with your blog? There doesn’t seem to be a post since November. Are you not blogging anymore?
Memphis Pizza Cafe, love it. Majestic Grille also makes excellent pizzas. They call them flatbreads, but they can be considered pizzas I think. They are delicious!

Michael,
It’s a shared blog, and my compatriots have been quiet, as have I. One of them was recently released from the hospital after a serious car accident and is learning how to walk again. The other is a student in Sweden. And then there’s me… and my job’s been keeping me busy.
And heck, I didn’t realize anyone was actually reading it!
My Swedish friend is coming to visit next week, so with luck, I’ll be able to revive it. Keep checking. I’ll update soon, I promise.

Let’s not forget Le Chardonnay. I live for their smoked chicken and spinach pizza. And the Chicago style pizza from Jimmy’s.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:48 am
I have to go w/a toss-up between Broadway & Memphis Pizza Cafe, but I like Exline’s & Garibaldi’s too. The difference is whether you want to eat there, pick it up & bring it home, or have it delivered. If I want to eat there, it’s definitely Memphis Pizza Cafe or Garibaldi’s.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:02 am
Oh, Carole H…you’ve got to like the ambience at Broadway Pizza, eating a great square while Elvis is looking on in envy!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 10:42 am
It depends on what kind of pizza I’m after…I love Memphis Pizza Cafe (their vegetable supreme and alternative pizzas especially), but I also love Milano’s, as they’re the closest thing to New York style pizza you can find down here. Memphis Pizza Cafe can’t be beat for “fancy” pizza, but when you want something simple and slightly greasy and delicious, my choice is always Milano’s.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:37 am
Memphis Pizza Cafe has not been great the last few times I have had a slice - rather bland! My new favorite is Ciao Bella’s pizza - great sauce, buttery crust and generous with the toppings! I also LOVE Luchessi’s take-out and bake at home pizzas. YUM and two snaps!
March 21st, 2008 at 11:42 am
The VERY BEST for me has to be the GREEK pizza at OLD VENICE. Next up would be a tie between Exlines and Broadway, depending on whether you wanted Bar-B-Q (Broadway) or Supreme (Exlines).
March 21st, 2008 at 11:55 am
Cafe Piazza and Firestone Pizza both in Collierville. We are from Chicago and hands down they are the best in Memphis.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Little Italy’s NY style cheese slices win hands-down as far as I’m concerned. I think Memphis Pizza Cafe and Ciao Bella have decent pizzas, but I only buy them if Little Italy happens to be closed at the time.
Dish has some pretty good personal pizzas (love the sundried tomato and goat cheese option), but they’re on the small side for a meal. Definitely good as a starchy treat paired with another tapas plate or two.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Oh yeah I forgot about Old Venice and Cafe Piazza in Collierville. Both very good!! Brooklyn Bridge always has my vote, too!!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Memphis Pizza Cafe, Bosco’s and Fox Ridge…depending on my mood. I love the Cajun Chicken Supreme at MPC (hold the onions and green pepper, add broccoli and pineapple), the Pollo Diablo at Bosco’s and almost anything at Fox Ridge when I’m in the mood for everyday, greasy pizza with lots of toppings. If you do a “best frozen” pizza I have a few faves there too…
March 21st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Ok, The best pizza is the lobster pizza at Red Lobster! It is on a thin crust and is to die for.
I guess I am the only one that loves the BBQ pizza at old Coletta’s.
Valenza’s pre-prepared Pizza is very very good.
Old Venice is also good.
Imo’s St Louis Style Pizza in Cape Girardeau MO is another good one
March 21st, 2008 at 3:15 pm
I go to Schnucks and get package of Roma’s white pizza crusts, a box of Corky’s BBQ and go home to make my own. I can quickly mix up my own sauce, add as much mozzarella as I like and put on the ‘Q. It’s very easy and cheap(I can make three hefty 12″ pies for about $20). I may be boring, but after a long day at work it’s nice to come home and kick off the shoes and chill with the family (as well as save about $20 to feed my family of four).
March 21st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
The slice at Little Italy is about as close to New York as you can get without a plane ticket.
Jimmy’s Dog’s thin-crust Chicago Style is excellent.
Fire & Stone, either in Collierville or in Southaven, makes a very good pizza–much like the Blue Monkey did before they stopped serving pizza.
For something close to home, with good pizza, that you wouldn’t mind taking the little league team to, Johnny Brusco’s is a remarkable chain.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Fred, I’m with you on the Coletta’s, especially the barbecue pizza. However, it is a once in a while indulgence. Day to day it is either Memphis Pizza Cafe or Exlines. My family loves the “Special” at Exlines.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:57 pm
I’m a big fan of Lucchessi’s take and bake pizza. Bosco’s pizzas are also good if you ask them to tone down the cheese. Le Chardonnay has good pizza too.
March 21st, 2008 at 6:23 pm
I’m telling all of you to try the lobster pizza at Red Lobster. It is good. I doesn’t sound like a good one, but it is.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Tie between Memphis Pizza Cafe and Old Venice.
Glad to see a vote on here for Imo’s - I am a St. Louis native and constantly crave those thin-crust, provel cheese topped squares of heaven on earth. Just back from visiting there and miss it already!
March 21st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Broadway on Broad - Hole in the wall , Looks like it did when Elvis ate there. I think they are waiting for him to return.
March 22nd, 2008 at 10:04 am
I vote with everyone else that Memphis Pizza Cafe has the best thin crust in town. We’ve never tried it by the slice - just the whole. (It even reheats fairly well if there is any left to take home.)
The pizzas at Blue Fin downtown (especially the mushroom and four cheese pies) are outstanding!
The old Coletta’s (on South Parkway) has great Bar-B-Q pizza.
March 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am
little italy for the good old new york style cheese
boscos for the wood-fired “gourmet” pizza
milanos for, as one blogger put it, “simple, slightly greasy, and delicious” pizza
broadway for the junky, piled-high topping kind o’ pie
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Unfortunately there is not great pizza in Memphis - which is so disappointing. lots of ok and medicore pizza but no great pies. It’s always the first thing my husband and I hunt down when traveling. The key to pizza is the crust so it makes sense that since there is no good bread in memphis there is no good pizza.
March 22nd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
eatin’ well isn’t eating well.
Try la baguette’s bread.
It’s as close to a true french loaf as you’ll find outside of france.
March 22nd, 2008 at 7:48 pm
No ambience. Great pizza. Milanos. Closest we’ve found tothe those wondeful pizzas we savored in Venice.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Julie,
You can get Imo’s Pizza Shipped or if you have time drive up to Cape Girardeau, MO (the closest one).
Here is the web address to order Imo’s Pizza http://stlouisstylepizza.stores.yahoo.net/
It makes a great party get-together addition. Let me warn the novice to the St Louis Pizza. It is made with shredded Provel cheese product. You can only by Provel Cheese in St Louis. Provel is basically a combined melted down Provolone/Mozzarella cheese. Speaking of St Louis, Is there a place in Memphis to get a Gerber Sandwich?
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Fred -
I have looked at the Imo’s ordering info - it would be cheaper for my family to drive there than to order and have shipped what we like! We usually do bring some home with us, but they usually don’t last the drive!
My brother claims that Provel is a mixture of provolone and Velveeta - it does have that consistency when melted!
FYI: You can buy Imo’s shredded cheese at Schnucks (at least the one on Forest Hill in G’town). It is with the bagged shredded cheeses in the dairy aisle.
I know of no where to buy a Gerber, but you could make one: buy Schnucks french baguette, some good shaved smoked deli ham, and the Imo’s cheese. Spread the slightest bit of garlic butter on the bread, layer with the ham and cheese, and warm open faced under the broiler. Yummy!
March 23rd, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Jimmy’s is my favorite pizza. I moved from Chicago so I am partial to the deep dish. However, when my hubby gets a craving for thin crust, the only time I go with him is if it’s Memphis Pizza Cafe. But it’s a long drive from Olive Branch to go there.
March 23rd, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Glad to see a few votes for Coletta’s. While I typically go for thinner crusts, I am loyal to the family-style prep of the Coletta’s pizza and the thicker, chewy crust is a luxury. Tell’em what you want and they’ll create pizzas off the menu.
Oh…and the atmosphere of the S. Parkway location can’t be beat. Sit at the bar and you’re in the Godfather, sit in the Star room and you’re in a Sinatra film. Had my rehearsal dinner in the Elvis room..no explanation needed.
Other contenders:
Lou’s Pizza
Le Chardonnay
Memphis Pizza Cafe
Broadway Pizza
And, for those traveling through NE AR, go to US Pizza in Newport.
March 23rd, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I agree with Eatin’ Well. No restaurant in the Memphis area makes a real pie.
March 24th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
If people are branching out to NE Arkansas, Pizza Chef and Main Street Pizza in Jonesboro both have pretty good gourmet pizzas. Alas, the changed ownership of the latter didn’t keep the recipe for the Zorba Greek pizza—easily the best veggie pizza I’ve had in the South.
March 24th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I’d have to say Mamma Mia’s out in Cordova at Houston Levee and Macon. Old Venice would be a close second.
I used to think Mem Pizza Cafe was the best.. but I think the quality has gone down in the last year or two.
March 24th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Brooklyn Bridge has my favorite pizzas in town. The crust is just right, and for me nothing beats the spinach and four cheese pizza. Although I enjoy all of their selections- you can’t go wrong there.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I also love Imo’s and Colletta’s BBQ pizza. The pizza at Fino’s is made with Provel. I think they carry Imo’s pizza saouce too.
I can’t believe that nobody has mentioned Pete & Sam’s pizza.
March 25th, 2008 at 8:58 am
I’ll add my vote for Pizza Cafe although they are a little incosistent. The last time I was there, it was just OK and service was pretty bad.
Although not a pizza, I love the “crisps” at Blue Monkey. Sometimes they can be too greasy, but usually are really good.
I don’t see the appeal of Exlines. Are some locations better than others? I have tried one on Summer and Union. Both were horrible.
I don’t get Pete & Sam’s either. I’ve never had anything good there.
A tip for reheating slices - heat in a skillet on the stove.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Not a word about the pizza at Villa Castriotti off Trinity? Granted it is best to eat it “in” but the crust stays crisp and doesn’t sog out, and the toppings are generous and fresh.
March 25th, 2008 at 10:34 am
No love for Pete & Sam’s? Maybe its because I’ve been eating it since I was 5, but I get serious cravings for some Pete & Sam’s.
March 25th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
cdel, the Exlines my family usually goes to/orders from is the one in Bartlett on Stage Rd. I’ve not had a bad pie there myself, of course this also could just be a subjective taste situation, too
I’ve also eaten at the one in Raleigh, but that was a really, really long time ago.
March 26th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Barbecue pizza from Lucchesi’s or Pete and Sam’s and any from Mempis Pizza Cafe rave with us.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
I prefer the Exline’s in Raleigh if I’m choosing. I had the BBQ pizza from Broadway recently. I’d had their pizza before, but not their BBQ pizza. It was like Colletta’s with cheese.
April 20th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Lou’s Pizza Pie in Young is a definite contender. You’ll find yourself craving one every time you think of pie!
