Julie is looking for instant espresso powder, dry scallops and knishes. Can anyone help? By the way, when I proposed a “Lost and Found” section a few months ago, it was Julie who pointed out that “Sought and Found” was really more expressive of the intent–and she was right. I love it that we’re trading so much useful information these days on the blog. Tomorrow, I’ll FINALLY post about our Chicago trip and set up a section for others to tell us about their out-of-city dining. I’m also going to start posting the contents of my fridge/freezer and pantry–and before you have time to wonder why you would possibly care about that, let me explain.
I’ve been a shameless consumer for years and have finally hit that STOP point with my kitchen that I do from time to time with my closet. So I’m making myself cook with what I have until I finish it. Read more about it in the Whining & Dining column tomorrow and look for periodic updates on the blog. Let’s see how creative I can get–or all of us can get, since I’ll likely be calling on everyone to help me figure out what to do with lima beans and shrimp…

Randal is right, I’d try Fino’s. Other possibilities would be Mantia’s, or Fresh Market.

I’ve found dried scallops at Winchester Farmer’s Market which is not an actual farmer’s market. It is one of the best international markets in town at the corner of Kirby & Winchester. Too bad it is way out east & not in midtown.
Mantia’s should have espresso powder, if not I would order it online. Cafe Eclectic on Mclean uses only Illy coffee & espresso, maybe they have some powder.

Lucchesi’s at Mendenhall and Sanderlin has espresso powder and many other wonderful things.

For instant espresso - Mantia’s definitely has it as does the Schnuck’s on Union - Just saw it this weekend. Fresh Market also may have.

If you mean dry packed scallops with no preservatives and liquid in the container, you won’t find them in this town. Some restaurants in town serve what they like to call Dry Scallops on their menus from the local seafood purveyors. Believe me, not the real thing, just because they drained the liquid doesn’t mean they are dry scallops. True dry scallops cost anywhere from $6-10 more per pound wholesale. The texture is much firmer and the color is closer to ivory than milky white.

Jennifer,
I read your comments in the paper about your pantry. I totally understand how you feel. A couple of times a year I have a “clean out the freezer” week. I take stock of what’s in the freezer and creatively cook from there. I’m amazed at all the little odds and ends that end up in my freezer. No one seems to notice anything different in the daily menus, but I do have a much emptier freezer at the end of the week!
