Help for a vegetarian

Folks were go nice when Stephanie wanted to find crawfish that Heather is coming to us now for help finding vegetarian fare. Here’s her e-mail. Let’s give her some help:

“I’m a vegetarian, and being a vegetarian in Memphis is definitely not easy. I was wondering if you could help me in finding a list of vegetarian friendly places (as in, they have vegetarian entrees aside from uninspiring vegetable plates or slimy overdone pasta!). I’m not necessarily talking about ethnic restaurants (Indian, Chinese, etc); though I do tend to have my most success with those places, and love them, I’m thinking about more of a fine dining restaurant, or an “American” style place. My usual dinner partner is a tried and true meat eater and tends to get frightened at the sight of too many beans and sprouts, so a restaurant with a mix of meat and vegetarian selections would be ideal.”

R.P. Tracks on Walker (next to the Tiger Bookstore) has amazing BBQ Tofu. It sounds funny, but it’s really ridiculously good. They have a great selection of Nachos, Quesadillas, Burritos, Salads and Sandwiches. My boyfriend who scoffs at tofu and vegetarian meals in general also loves the place.

Circa always has a vegetarian option on the lunch menu, but dinner is mostly meat and fish. Also, Central BBQ has a great portabello BBQ sandwich. Bari also has a couple of options, and vegetarians can make a dinner out of their delicious antipasti- lots of garlicky grilled veggies, and I particularly like the fava beans with chicory.

Norma Rosenthal

One of my favorites is the Grilled Portabello and Goat Cheese sandwich at the Grove Grill! I have had it several times and the goat cheese adds a nice pop of flavor. Another alternative is the Vegetable Plate which you create yourself by selecting 4 sides.

The Brushmark Restaurant at the Brooks Museum offers a Root Vegetable Tart Tatin worth trying. And, of course, you could make more than a meal from the Texas de Brazil’s salad area without feeling the least bit deprived.

Thanks Jennifer (and everyone!) - I really appreciate it. I’ve been stuck in a food rut lately, and am looking for some new options, but being a vegetarian can require a little advanced planning sometimes. Thanks so much for your posts!

Memphis is not the best place to search for Vegetarian dishes. One trapped in Memphis as a vegan usually ends up in the one Ethiopian, the two Indian restaurants, or going Buddist Delight option in the Chinese restaurant.

Personally, I am not a true vegan, I just try to limit and exclude red meat from my diet. This allows fish and chicken in a diet.

Here are some options for the Vegan person stuck on Germantown Parkway Beltway:

Red Robin has a great Veggie Burger. It is the best tasting of the Veggie Burgers.

I eat the Huey’s Garden Burger all the time, it is above average as well.

Fazoli’s has a grat spaghetti sauce without meat. It is an option to consider.

Danvers had a Garden Burger at one time, and the one of germantown Parkway’s was the best. Please call to see if they still have the vegan burger. In my habit of avoiding red meat, I often order the turkey burger from Danvers.

Jason’s Deli has a great Veggie wrap, I eat it often. It is satisfying and is a great option.

Subway and Lennys offer a veggie sub, but that simply means a sub without meat, but all the other garnishment. One has to consider to avoid the use of cheese on their sandwich, since it is a meat byproduct.

Much of the problem in vegan diet is how food is cooked. The south is famous for extreme seasoning as in meat (fatback, salt pork, bacon) and cooking in lard. SO even when a person suggests veggie dishes, there may be some sort of meat byproduct in the dish. Mayo is a problem, since it has eggs (a meat byproduct) in it.

Westy’s (the old North End) has a good veggie burger. they also have very good freshly made spinach artichoke dip and the best fried mushrooms i’ve ever had.
Zinnie’s has a good veggie burger, a monster veggie potato, a great veggie sandwich on focaccia, a veggie “pizza” on a tortilla, veggie nachos, a veggie quesadilla, really large salads, veggie crepes, etc.
Pizza Cafe, besides pizza, has a very good veggie sandwich.
Lou’s Pizza Pie has very different pizzas, many with a pesto base instead of a tomato base. haven’t tried the sandwiches, yet, but they sound great.
Tsunami has veggie appetizers and small plates and will make a veggie entree for you if there isn’t one on the menu. tho, if you eat fish, eat it at Tsunami.
Fino’s has a veggie pasta featured every day.
Pho Hoa Binh’s lunch buffet is half veggie/tofu everyday.
and i absolutely love Indian, so no problem there.
and, yes, RP Tracks has a huge selection of veggie and tofu quesadillas, nachos, sandwiches, etc. and the bbq sandwich or nachos are great!
Sekisui (all of the incarnations) also has veggie tempura and some veggie sushi rolls.
i often do the nachos at Huey’s with no meat. i’m addicted to them.
wow, am i hungry now.

Young Ave Deli has some very interesting vegetarian pitas and wraps, and a fabulous hummus appetizer that is a meal for two.

Go to Cozy Corner and ask for forgiveness for your sin, bow down to the altar of pork, and change your ways. You will be well rewarded.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

FIG

CHeck out the Brushmark at the Brooks Museum for their Pita Sandwich stuffed with Lentils Cakes and Hummus and for an entree, they do a Chickpea Panisse with Grilled Endive, oyster mushrooms, and fresh soybeans with a smnoked paprika ricotta sauce. Very imaginative vegetarian options other than your usual portabella mushroom sandwich or gardenburgers.

Neil

Try Mantia’s in the evening. Usually one of the selections is vegetarian.

Susan

Houston’s vegetables are cooked with love and care and they always have a good vegetable plate offering. Your friend can have the ribs and everyone will be happy!

Cafe Eclectic has a good portabella panini. They have another panini that sounded good with pear and cheese (maybe gorgonzola). They also have a burger so your meat-eating partner will be happy also.

If you are looking for fast food fare, Back Yard Burger has a veggie burger (I’m pretty sure it’s a Boca Burger.) It’s a nice quick option.

Going out for beers? - Zinnie’s East has a good grilled veggie appetizer plate. It includes zuchinni and green beans - not just the usuals. Sure it’s swimming in oil and sodium, but that’s what makes it so good.

you could also try some of the home-cookin’ places around town like The Cupboard for a veggie plate. Although, they may use animal fat to cook in.
I wonder if Soul Fish uses animal fat for the veggies. Their vegetables are very good.

Molly

Beauty Shop also usually has some very interesting vegetarian options. Cafe Ole does a great veggie burrito and veggie tacos. Most of the “authentic” places (Taqueria Guadalupana among others) also offer interesting vegetarian selections. Automatic Slims also always has a vegetarian option @ lunch and dinner.

Matt

I’ll echo previous comments about Zinnie’s East (love the veggie panini!) and Mantia’s. I’ve had a really good pasta primavera at Automatic Slim’s.

Ethnic food may be the best bet for a wider variety of vegetarian choices, though. Casablanca Cafe is my favorite place to take my vegetarian cousin—it has several veggie appetizer options including a big combo em shekel appetizer special that’s enough to feed two, as well as a mixed vegetable plate, veggie couscous, and very good lentil soup. Jasmine Thai restaurant is proud to have a largely vegetarian menu with a lot of choices. And most Japanese steakhouses have some good teppanyaki and tempura options—Ryu Sushi bar and Steakhouse would be my top recommendation among those (they use fresh zucchini in their grilled items as well as onions and mushrooms).

For pub grub, go to Hueys (several locations). The New York Veggie burger is the best I’ve had in my 20 years as a vegetariam..it’s thick, rich site will make your meat-eating friends want to try.

Heavenly Hoagie on Madison in Midtown has a Garden Burger Hoagie that will make you swear off other sub places for vegetarian fare. Pete will also add a Garden Burger to other sandwiches.

If you have the $$, Grove Grill on Poplar has a 4 vegetable dinner plate. Many mini-dishes to choose from, just ask if any contain meat (i.e., the blue-cheese cole slaw contains bacon).

Even if you’re tired of asian cuisine, do try Pho Hoah Binh’s lunch time buffet. Few buffets offer so many veg choices in soups and entrees. Take home some springs while you’re there.

Ann

I recommend Thai Bistro, even though it’s an ethic restaurant they are willing to cater to your needs. Nothing on the menu is premade so you are able to substitute whatever you like. I included their website so your able to check out what they have to offer.
