IĀ told you today would be easier. But let’s dig deep on this one and come up with some places that are off the beaten path, along with the usuals. Tell me who’s got the best fried bird…

I’m not a big fried chicken eater, but Gus’s is easily a top choice. I’ve also had decent eating at The Silver Caboose.

Fried chicken is one of those things best made at home; nothing I’ve had in town even comes close to what comes out of my skillet.
That said, Gus’s chicken isn’t bad, although lapses in service have been bad enough over the years to make me an infrequent customer at best.

I love “Unle Lou’s” honey-fried chicken, although I only seem to find it a kiosks during the fair, or Memphis in May. Gus’s chicken is good, too, but the service is poor and the side items are completely sub-standard, so that makes me an infrequent customer, also.

Been to Gus’s in Southaven yet? it’s better than Downtown in quality AND service…

Let’s not forget about the Cupboard and Dodge’s (especially the one on South Third - on the way to/from the casinos).

I am also a fan of Gus’ but being a midtowner I really enjoy Barksdale’s Fried Chicken plates on Fridays, not to mention the sweet tea and mashed potatoes you can get as one of your vegetable options.

I agree about Barksdale’s & also their mac & cheese, which is the custardy type.

Wow, Randal, I’m impressed! Fried chicken is one thing I’ll NEVE make at home, particularly since I live in Memphis — way too messy for one thing!
Love Gus’ but hate the sides, which is fine, because that leaves room in my belly for more chicken. Heard great things about Uncle Lou’s, but have only had the wings. Love Stein’s, a cafeteria-style soul food joint at Lauderdale and Mallory. Alcenia’s and Popeye’s rate pretty high too. And I love the fried chicken-on-a-stick at the Chevron in Oxford!

You would think Memphis would be a chicken haven, given that we could probably fry chicken on the pavement in the summer. But I can only echo some of the sentiments of other bloggers: Gus’s branch in C’ville is less than seven minutes from my driveway–it’s got the spicy chicken niche, but my kids won’t touch it. And like Ann, I confess Picadilly’s fried bird is pretty darn tasty–moist, tender meat with a nice crispy crust. . . . Why do I suddenly feel a poultry void that I have never felt before?

Been eating Picadilly fried chicken for decades. I ‘ve found some as good, but none better. A plate of fried wings and …. Well, Picadilly no longer has real mashed potatoes and none of the other sides (carrot souffle notwithstanding) is worthy of sitting next to those wings.
Popeye’s spicy - sometimes you just gotta have some.

I don’t get what the hype is about with Gus’. Popeye’s is way better. Dodge’s ain’t bad either.

Best friend chicken is at the corner Osama stop & shop at Walnut Grove and Germantown Road. If you need to buy a lot of chicken for a party , go to Superlow next to Target

Try the Wed. lunch special at Front St Deli - the fried chicken is as close to home cooked that I have ever had.

Uncle Lou’s is the best honey fried chicken with the honey drizzled homemade biscuits. I started eating his chicken from a booth at Mid South Fair and then discovered he does a great job with catering. Gus’s is great with that bit of “hot” taste to it but hard to get past the bad service and “school cafeteria” side dishes.

Gus’ is too spicy to suit me, but if I’m going for a chain, it’s Popeye’s, Church’s or Pirtle’s, depending on which sides I’m in the mood for. Church’s has some exceptionally good fried okra too - more cornmeal than batter & a little crispier than most. I usually have it eaten hot from the fryer on the way home in the car, depending on traffic. For wings, I like All Star or Ching’s seasoned ones. I agree about the now-defunct Buntyn, which I grew up eating. Their chicken was coated in pancake batter.

Mr. Jiffy # 2 Batesville Mississippi has serious chicken. You will have to stand in line a bit but it is well worth the wait.

Now if we’re talking about wings, it’s got to be D’Bo’s seasoned wings. I have to limit the times I go there for fear I’ll hurt myself!

Go to Schnuck’s in Southaven, Ms Mr. Ed fry the best fried chicken. Check this place out on Sunday Schnuck’s has so many order of fried chicken for Mr. Ed to fry.

I agree with FIG…I just don’t get the hype over Gus’. For me, there’s none better than homemade, but Pirtle’s runs close, followed by Popeye’s when you want it spicy.

If I had to pick my last supper, it would be fried chicken. I am extremely picky about mine, and I like a lot of different kinds for different reasons. When it is piping hot, there’s no beating the fried chicken from Superlo. It also happens to by my favorite picnic fried chicken.
I think Gus’ chicken is just fine, but I don’t think it’s the best in the world.
There’s a restaurant in New Orleans (Jacques-Imo’s) that has REALLY great fried chicken, but still not the best.
I am always on the quest for the perfect fried chicken…

Carole H and I are cut from the same cloth. I love Church’s Chicken. I thas a unique taste.
Popeye’s chicken is good. They cut their wings a little differently, and you get a lot more meat on Popeye’s Wings than most wings. Try them and see if you don’t think there is a bit more meat on their wings.
Rotissary chicken, the best is Costco! Many of the Krogers have pretty good baked and rotissery, and herb chicken.
Any place out there sell fried chicken necks anymore?

Stein’s and Gus’s all the way! Of course, the Memphis City Schools Board of Education’s fried chicken lunch on Wednesday is as good as my Granny’s! Sides are great too!
