Is everyone ready for a little fun with our beer tasting tonight? I believe I’ll be conducting this one from the screened porch since it is a gorgeous day and a great night to get the grill going. So come back at 7, click on the “Live blog” box in this post, and Steve Barzizza will tell us all about our beers: La Fin du Monde, Chimay Red Cap and Naked Lion Brewing Company Copper Flask. Pick the first two up at the liquor store, if you haven’t already done so; the Copper Flask is at the grocery. Maybe Tony Vieira, the Germantown owner of Naked Lion, will join us, too. And Dick Pepper from bigfoamyhead.com and Chuck Skypeck from Boscos…

Welcome everyone!I’m Steve Barzizza with Southwestern and I am going to introduce you to the fun world of beer tonight.Millions of dollars have been spent to tell you what beer taste like’but tonight we are going to try to change your opinion of beer.I’m very fortunate to have Billy Huddleston the old wine merchant from here at Southwestern and Tony Vieira with Naked Lion in our testing kitchen tonight,so I think were going to have a great time and hopefully win some new friends. Were going to taste 3 beers tonight.First the Copper flask followed by a great Dubbel from Belgium then a wonderful Triple from Unibroue in Canada. So clear you mind a palet and lets get rockin!

What a great way to try new beers! Nice to see the cross-section of experienced and novice beer drinkers, and as Steve said, the open mind to try new things.
If you’re looking to learn more about beer, styles, etc. I would of course refer you to my website, http://www.bigfoamyhead.com, but also point you to http://www.beersafari.com, a collection of internet podcasts. These can get a bit long, and often R-rated (there is alcohol involved, you know) but can broaden your ideas of what’s out there on the horizon.
Beer tastings, both live and online, are a fantastic way to savor the flavors without breaking the budget. Contact Steve for information on upcoming events.
At Boscos and Flying Saucer you can do “flights” of beer - many little samples that let you try a range of flavors and styles.
My favorite of the night would be the Le Fin du Monde. Never heard it described as a mulled wine, but that’s the beauty of beers - they inspire descriptions! Although I had to drop off early, I was able to work in a comparable beer or two later on, including a Chimay Cinq Cents, the white label Steve mentioned. It’s a great Trippel, very light and has the clove and banana tastes. As we were sampling it we thought this would be a great pairing with ham - either with it, or cooked in it!
Thanks Jennifer!
