Wine in grocery stores?

Have you seen the story online at our home page? Seems that there’s a renewed push from Tennessee grocers to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores. Of course, it seems likely that we’ll find a push back from liquor stores.  Here’s the link to the story :(click here). Sound off, people! Will it happen? If it means we get a Trader Joe’s–I say pass the law, man!

They actually do have Trader Joe’s in places with liquor laws similar to our own, at least according to the website–there may be something else keeping them out of Memphis.

(Also, I sent an email a couple of days ago–and signs seem to indicate that it never made it through)

Yup - when I lived in DC, I was close to Maryland, but would go all the way to Virginia (before DC proper had a TJ’s) because that one had wines and beer. I think it might be market demographics that keep TJ’s out of Memphis. Shame. But if you can get them here, we are all behind you.

Meanwhile, any news on Whole Foods? Panera? Bueller?

You can buy wine at grocery stores in both Missouri and Ohio (I have relatives in both states) and the selection is great! Especially at Sam’s and Costco! Imagine the selection there might be at stores like Fresh Market or Wild Oats here? I say bring it on!!!

We have been getting ripped off long enough. If you live in midtown you are paying much more then out east. I say bring it!

I emailed everyone in my address book to join the effort by going to www.redwhiteandfood.com. Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to make 2 stops for dinner? And don’t you ever get into a bind on Sunday when you realize that you forgot to buy wine for dinner? This happened to my husband and me last weekend when my sister-in-law was in transit driving to Memphis from Los Angeles. She had to stop at a winery in Arkansas (of all places) to buy wine. After 3 days of driving across the country, there was no way she was going to get here and not have wine with her dinner.

And yes, I know, we should keep it stocked, but we drink with a meal the night we buy it.

On one hand, it would be really nice to pick up a bottle of wine while grocery shopping. On the other hand, wine sales are big business for many local small business owners. Nearly all grocery stores are owned by out-of-state corporations. Those local businesses have been operating within the law for 50 years, and now their business model will be wiped out if this passes. Liquor just doesn’t have the same profit margins as wine.
