2005 Carpineto Dogajolo tasting

Don’t forget to sign on tonight at 7 to join us for our fifth online wine tasting. After two weeks of white, this week we’re back to red. Robert Dean of United Liquors is our host and he thinks we’re going to love this Italian wine, which is a blend of 20 cabernet sauvignon and 80 percent sangiovese.

He’s recommended duck for dinner, and I’m planning to stop and pick up one already cooked at Viet Hoa. See you all back here at 7, and remember, keep refreshing your browser so you can see the new comments.

fredric koeppel

Hi, friends and readers, I told Jennifer that I’m going to a wine tasting tonight and then LL and I have to go visit a sick friend and eat out somewhere, but between those comings and goings, if I can drop a note on the wine here, I will. This is a very enjoyable bottle; I’ve had it several times and written about it before, so I predict this will be a favorite with the crowd. Cheers!

Vinnie D

I bought a bootle of this wine at Joe’s for $13.99. It seems high for this wine?

Vinnie D

But I like the label !

Vinnie D

Is this a food wine or a wine that I can Quaf?

Jennifer Biggs

Hi Vinnie. I paid $12.99 at Buster’s and I’m curious to hear what others paid. Robert told me $10.99 so I published $11.

We’re a few minutes early, so let’s wait for the others…

Vinnie D

ok.. thanks I am always looking for the best price on wine I enjoy

Jennifer Biggs

I definitely think price is something we should discuss. Robert, are you here yet?

Jennifer Biggs

OK, it’s 7 by my computer. Robert, what exactly is a “Super Tuscan”?

Dave & Pam

Pam’s down with that sinus/cough/yuk that’s going around, so it is just me tasting tonight. This is a real food wine,`as mentioned. My first sip tasted very astringent, but it really came to life with Pam’s famous (to us that know about it, anyway) homemade meat sauce on spaghetti. Yumm, the wine takes on a whole different flavor with food.

Jennifer Biggs

Well, Vinnie, I think we’re it for now. The first thing I noticed about the wine was a spicy nose–clove and bay, specifically. Your first impressions?

Jennifer Biggs

Hi Dave. Hope Pam feels better. Boy, everyone has it.

Marie

I really tasted cherry when I first tried this wine.

denise

how do you pronounce dogajolo??

Vinnie D

I am not good on smell But I like this full bodied wine with a nice long finish

Vinnie D

It is a food wine

Marie

The bottle says dogayalo, I think.

denise

i definitely get cherry..nice fruit

Jennifer Biggs

Dave, I noticed the astringency too and pondered over whether it was best described as acid or tannin. I’ve got my reading material at hand tonight so I looked it up and it says that if your mouth is dry and then it waters, it’s acid (the saliva neutralizes the acid). But if it’s the tannins, your mouth stays dry.

Henrietta

when are we starting?

Marie

So, i would say acid, then.

Jennifer Biggs

I can see cherry, but my notes say blackberry pie. I’ve had the bottle sitting open for about an hour and as we’ve learned in the last month, a lot can happen in an hour. It’s much more savory and richer now.

Jennifer Biggs

Henrietta, we have begun, and welcome to everyone. Glad that you’re feeling better, Marie.

Dave & Pam

Jennifer, now that dinner is over and I am tasting again, I would say tannin, because my mouth stayed dry. Anyone else?

Henrietta

I have never had blackbrry pie.

Vinnie D

I am starting to think 13.99 is a good price.

Larry & Mimmye

It has tannins also — Larry thinks it has a good tannin-acid balance and good dark fruit– nose hasn’t opened up yet. He expected a dirtier nose. I opened the bottle about 6:50pm.

denise

is robert joining us tonight?

Vinnie D

yes that is why I think this wine needs food

Henrietta

Is Robert with us?

Vinnie D

Who is Robert?

Jennifer Biggs

Robert should be here and we’re bound to hear from him soon. But until he shows up, Larry and Mimmye know what they’re talking about so let’s hear more from them.

Marie

My husband tried this wine and did not like it all…said it left a bad taste in his mouth. However, he’s a beer drinker…

Jennifer Biggs

Robert is Robert Dean with United Liquors. He selected the wine for tonight and he will be here to guide us soon…

Marie

What do you mean, a dirtier nose?

Vinnie D

Thanks sorry…… My wife said this was a John Vego tasting

Larry & Mimmye

When I got this wine from John Vego at Buster’s, he said it was actually a Chianti, but had been de-classified because of addition of Cabernet Savignon. A Super Tuscan cannot be classified as a Chianti because it has some Bordeau grapes in it as well. They are usually very well-made — and expensive! This is cheap for a Super-Tuscan.

Donnie & David

This is our second tasting. Enjoyed last week very much. Red is David’s favorite…he likes this one. He got the “spicy nose” when first opened.

denise

did anyone get duck for tonight as robert suggested??

Jennifer Biggs

Vinnie, John did last week’s tasting, a nice French white. Remember that the weather is bad, so perhaps Robert has been delayed because of that.

john&elisha

My wine is still to cold.Just came out of the cellar.

Jennifer Biggs

L/M, do you know for sure that it’s a Super Tuscan? I don’t–I’ve just read a little about it and wondered.

Jennifer Biggs

John Vego, is that you?

Glad you’re enjoying it, David.

Henrietta

I don’t care for duck meat.

Vinnie D

I think this wine is A GREAT VALUE. I will take it to Spindini’s on Friday.

john&elisha

yes it is me

Henrietta

I think I remember seeing this wine on the list at Flemings steakhouse. I really enjoy the wine

Jennifer Biggs

So what is everyone eating? We bought the duck (not the best I’ve ever had) and roasted potatoes, carrots and onions. But I haven’t started my meal yet. Did anyone make the beef dish?

Jennifer Biggs

Glad you’re here, John. Is this wine a Super Tuscan?

Marie

We had it with a small steak and a spinach pesto and pasta.

Jane

I bought mine at Poplar Pike Liquor for $10.99. I really like it.

john&elisha

Nice fruit with good acidity.Dried cherries.a good pasta wine.Perfect for Pete and sams

Dave & Pam

Marie, tell your husband that this wine MUST be tried with food! I can understand why it wouldn’t appeal to him. I think he would probably gain appreciation for wine, if properly paired with the right food. I like a good beer also, but it is ususally food neutral. Wine can improve the flavor of your meal, if properly matched.

Larry & Mimmye

Who said this was a super-Tuscan? We’re not sure. A Super-Tuscan is a blend of Bordeau & Italian grapes. John, can you help us?

A dirty nose is good — will have hints of barnyard, cedar, tobacco, sometimes dirty socks, but with a sweet feeling.

Marie

As time has passed, I taste a hint of coffee?

Jennifer Biggs

Yum, Marie.

This wine grows heavier as it breathes. John or L/M, can you tell us whether this would be a good candidate for decanting or aerating, or is it fine from the bottle?

I like it, by the way.

Vinnie D

It works well with our Veal Parm, My wife can’t stop commenting on the label. Women!

Marie

Larry and Mimmye, my husband says “Dirty socks? That’s why i prefer beer!” ;-)

susan

Any suggestions of this wine with certain cheeses?

Jennifer Biggs

I asked Robert what a Super Tuscan is–I wasn’t sure if this wine is one or not. I guess not if it’s a blend of bourdeaux and sangiovese, since this is the cab belnd.

john&elisha

I wouldn’t personally use super tuscan for this wine but the law allow them to.It does not fall in Doc or Docg
This would be called a table wine in the old days

Henrietta

It is a great label for fall, on the thanksgiving table. John, are you filling in for Robert?

Jane

My husband didn’t like it either, and he drinks whiskey. I think cherries, too, but not dirty socks, and I’ve had mine open for an hour.

Larry & Mimmye

We don’t make a habit of opening a wine too early. We just pour it in the glass and let it evolve there and experience the different stages it goes through. That way you don’t miss anything.

Jennifer Biggs

Marie, tell your husband we’re thinking about a big beer tasting down the line.

Donnie & David

I (Donnie)am not fond of reds…but I’m trying this one anyway. I’m getting a “pucker” on the back of my tongue that stays a bit. What’s that called?

Vinnie D

If John is here we are in good hands….

denise

i am having this with my girlfriends and we all love this wine. glad we bought more than one bottle!

john&elisha

Super tuscans use sangiovese blended with syrah merlot cab there is no certain law

Vinnie D

This wine has started to really open up. wow

Larry & Mimmye

The description of “dirty nose” was to answer the question. Our comment was that this wine doesn’t have the dirty nose we expected.

Henrietta

whats the difference in doc and docg?

Vinnie D

how much did you pay?

Jennifer Biggs

Just checked voice mail and I haven’t heard from Robert, so I’m afraid I don’t know what’s happened.

So John, the sangiovese is a rugged grape, right? It’s blended to smooth it out, pretty it up a little?

Dave & Pam

I remember my first Chainti (more years ago than I care to admit) and the “old socks” fits for them, in general. Again, it is a food wine, and a very good one.

Marie

Jennifer…my husband is very interested in the beer tasting.

denise

this is my first tasting with all of you…have you all ever talked about meeting somewhere and doing the tasting together?

Jennifer Biggs

Marie, we’ll probably wait until it warms up a bit, and the tasting will be the liquor store beers, not grocery store ones. I like beer, too, so I’m also looking forward to it.

Vinnie D

John what cheeses would you pair it with?

Vinnie D

D They need to have more tastings.

brad

Hey Robby, missed you at JayWags last night.

denise

i hope robert is alright!

Larry & Mimmye

We’re having Cincinnati chili because it was in the freezer. It has all-spice, cloves and chocolate among other things and it’s over pasta. Larry says he thinks it goes well. I think it would have gone better with an Italian pasta dish which doesn’t have the chili flavoring.

Vinnie D

What does that mean?

Henrietta

Who is Robby?

john&elisha

doc goes back to the sixies and was the first control over wine,It would like Franch Aoc.Origin contol.Docg come in the eighties origin contol garantita

Vinnie D

What is Jay Wags? A restaurant ?

john&elisha

the cab rounds out the sangiovese which is none for its acidity

Jennifer Biggs

Who is Robby? Vinnie, I think this wine would be nice with both timid and assertive cheeses, although I don’t see it with heavy blue ones.

I think an Italian Fontina, a hard Parm or Grana Padana, or even a creamy cheese like a Camembert or brie. I just don’t think blues or a sharp feta, for instance, would pair well. But I prefer contrast to complement in wine/cheese pairings.

Henrietta

What is the wine for next week & who is the “host blogger”?

Larry & Mimmye

Neither of us is getting much nose even now, but the flavor is developing with purple fruit coming forward.

Vinnie D

John what would you pair with this wine?

Jennifer Biggs

Next week the wine is Jessie Stone Earth, Zin and Fire and the host is Brett Barrett with Victor Robilio Co. He’s suggesting we pair it with lamb and–hopefully–he’ll be here arond 7:50 to tell us a little about it.

Jennifer Biggs

That wine is by Lodi, by the way. It’s a California wine, our first domestic wine.

Larry & Mimmye

The wine is getting softer and rounder — maybe because we’ve been drinking it for a while.

john&elisha

simple foods as pasta, pizza or as jennifer said cheese would be great.

Jennifer Biggs

Let’s take a minute to weigh in on Valentine’s Day. Does everyone want to do the tasting as scheduled on that night or to switch it to Wednesday, Feb. 13? We didn’t reach a decision last week.

Vinnie D

This wine has really gotten better. I think I can fool my friends into thinking it’s a $20 bottle. How do you pronounce the name…. It’s a tuffy

julie

sorry….late…sister….hospital

spicy nose
tannin more than acid to me

lovely color

Jennifer Biggs

Dogayola, Vinnie (it’s in parentheses on the bottle).

john&elisha

not alot of complexity but I like the old world meets the new.

Larry & Mimmye

Doesn’t matter to us about Valentine’s Day, but next Thursday, we’re doing Chinese New Year.

denise

vinnie-look on the bottle under the name..it shows how to sayit i think.. the “j” is a “y”

Robert

Sorry but Life is Stranger than fiction!Hows the wine?

Jennifer Biggs

Julie! I was worried about you. John, this is Julie from last week and she told me today she was planning to buy a case of your In Fine. She loved it!

john&elisha

wednesday for me

Dave & Pam

Pam and I really don’t like lamb. Being basically a bold Zin, I would think a good red meat course would work with next weeks wine? Any other suggestions?

Robert

The “Dogajolo” means Wood Stave!

Donnie & David

For me (Donnie) the wine is getting mellower and easier for me to swallow…no more “pucker” on the back of my tongue. By the way, my grandmother made wine in Lodi, but it was Lodi, MISSISSIPPI, and the wine was muscadine! I vote for Wednesday for next week.

Robert

Yes Robert with a 3 yr old under my feet, do we like the wine?

Jennifer Biggs

I really want to do Chinese New Year, too. Maybe they hve wi-fi there and we can blog from the restaurant!

denise

wednesday is good for us

Henrietta

robert,How did you prepare your duck for dinner?

Vinnie D

John I am I crazy if I open this at my super bowl party with spicey wings and nachos

julie

really opening up now…

definitely blackberries/brambly fruits in nose
cherry on top in mouth

Jennifer Biggs

Dave, we’ll ask Brett when he signs on and I’ll provide a recipe for lamb and for something else. Many people don’t like lamb, though I’m not one of them. Brett actually recommended lamb shanks, which I love and I might have to try them in a pressure cooker. Otherwise they’ll take too long to cook.

susan

Greek spaghetti has lamb and may be a good alternative for next week, especially for those you don’t actually favor lamb. Me, I do.

Vinnie D

the more wine the worse my spelling gets

Vinnie D

and grammer

Marie

I can do either night.

Jennifer Biggs

Donnie, I buy organic muscadine wine every time I go to New Orleans and I add it to my sangria in the summer. It’s a Southern thang!

Vinnie D

It looks like robert got stuck in cyber traffic

john&elisha

The wine has got that deep cherry mid palate with that classic dry finish.I really like this wine for the price

Henrietta

I have never heard of greek spag. what is in it?

Larry & Mimmye

I spilled my first glass all over the printer! We really need to get our space better organized. Spicy wings and nachos should work well with this wine.

Robert

We grilled the Duck with a black pepper rub and a hint of Cinnamion over thetop, rare.

julie

Robert…you are so right…we couldn’t make up this life stuff, huh? I was late, too.

Jennifer…thanks for your kindness…managed to break a bottle in John’s store…I YI YI…but despite being MOR TEE FIDE…Will was wonderful and I ALMOST got a case of In Fine…GOT all they had! LOL….should have gotten more of this!

YUMMY

Jennifer Biggs

Sounds lovely, Susan. Do you have a favorite recipe for Greek spaghettic you’d like to share? I always put a pinch of cinnamon in my meat sauces, which I first tasted in Greek spaghetti.

Vinnie D

Now that sounds good

julie

You people that cook…if I donate grocery money, will you include me in the count??? LOL..I cook, but life is in the way these days….

Chinese NY sounds fun…

john&elisha

vinnie you open what makes you happy.personal taste for ones self is fine

Robert

This winery is in the heart of Chaniti amd makes some wonderful IGt wine like the “Dog”. The IGT alloys the producer to make his of her wine with any Vireital they choose. Super Tuscan was what they called the wine early on because they could charge the super price. Now the wines are much more foward and very affordable.

susan

Greek spaghetti has lamb, red sauce, cinnamon. Simmered for a while the lamb falls into pieces. It’s really wonderful and simple.

Jennifer Biggs

OK, these broken wine bottles are weird. Today my cat brought a bird in the house (happens all the time) and apparently in the ruckus, one of the dogs ran into an armoire in the kitchen and a bottle of red wine broke on the floor and splattered all over the wall. It’ll have to be repainted, and my house smelled like a winery when I came in!

julie

TOOO funny Larry & Mimmye…I couldn’t get my first comment submitted because AFTER breaking a bottle in the wine store, I spilled MOST of the first glass on my futer desk. I YI YI…stressed folks DO have more accidents….AM glad I managed to keep car intact..LOL

Marie

I bought a bottle of the red In Fine to try this weekend.

julie

Jen–let’s share dog stories off line…you know where I am going with this, don’t you, John & Elisha????

Love to Tyler V.

Henrietta

what exactly is IGT?

Vinnie D

Robert was does price vary from store to store in this town? Buster’s is cheaper then Joes

john&elisha

Julie we love too.Tyler is great thanks for caring

Vinnie D

I’m just glad I am not driving

julie

Rob–EXCELLENT choice…SUPER is the operative superlative….and since I am NOT eating yet, the fact that it’s a good quaff w/o food TO ME….speaks volumes…

julie

BTW–an hour is NOT long enough….

Jennifer Biggs

Julie, I can talk dogs all day. And now that I have this cat, it’s a whole new world. E-mail me anytime.

Brett, are you online? If not, John or Robert, do either of you know about the Lodi Jessie Stone Earth, Zin and Fire for next week?

Robert

Not into that but you may see the range from $9.99 to 11.99. depends on the deal level of each store. Did any one have a hard time finding it?

denise

let’s keep going since robert is with us now~!

julie

I am getting tobacco in the nose and coffee in mouth…am I over imbibed?

Marie

Buster’s had quite a bit of it in stock.

Robert

The Nice thing about the “quaff: is that price has nothing to do you quality and thats why we love the IGT wines from Italy

Henrietta

I am almost out of wine!!

Vinnie D

yes…Denise have you girls opened the 2nd bottle?

Jennifer Biggs

Robert, I think everyone paid more than $11.99. Did anyone get it for less?

Larry & Mimmye

No! Larry’s getting coffee on the nose as well. The bottle’s almost gone and it’s just now starting to open.

Robert

Nope I think this wines is a great start to the “Super Tuscan but affordable” wines

denise

yes!! about 20 min ago…yummy!

julie

Lord, Child, I was a ‘cat’ person way before I discovered dogs…..I have, or shall I say, 3 have me as their slave.

But this wine is as good a red as In Fine is a white (Vinnie–last week’s choice from John V.)

Marie

I have to go…Lost is starting and I MUST watch it. I enjoyed the tasting and look forward to next week. Good night!

Robert

The winery was founde in 1967 and is one of the Few to wine The Robert Mondavia Award of Excellence

julie

NOTE to all OUR SELFS: buy 2 bottles of whatever it is we’re to taste each week.

LOL

Robert

Lost is what we all will be at 10:30pm

Larry & Mimmye

That “No!” was in response to Julie’s question about being over-imbibed — not to the question about the cost.

Jennifer Biggs

I’m obviously not drinking enough! I never even finish half a bottle. Well, I probably had a little more than half of the riesling because it was so easy to drink…

julie

Marie, honey, put a TV where your ‘futer is, silly!

Donnie & David

Okay…it’s back to the hot tub for us to finish off the bottle. Catch you all next week.

Robert

1 bottle is for starters two bottles is for pros!

Vinnie D

Whooga….. I am glad Robert finally showed. This was a great pick Bobby D. Goodnight my new friends

Henrietta

You have alot of knowledge on the wine. Have you ever been to Italy?

Jennifer Biggs

I’m tempted to tell you all what happens on Lost–I watched the preview DVD of the first two shows…

Only joking–I would never spill the beans.

julie

Robert…did you say “start to super Tuscans”–you mean, there’s MORE….oh boy….50 is gonna be the best year yet…..

denise

guess that makes us girls pros, robert!

julie

FYI–red wine in keyboard not a fatal sitchy ashun.

Robert

Any other thoughts? This winery makes a great higher end Chardonnay and Cabernet.

julie

Y’all–we gotta find where Donnie & David are and GET IN THAT TUB!!!!

Larry & Mimmye

We thought it was a good value and a good wine with food.

denise

henrietta–some friends of ours just got back from a trip to italy this past fall and said that it was just beautiful!

Robert

Thank you what did you pay and where

Jennifer Biggs

OK, so we haven’t had a bad wine yet. Would anyone like to comment on their favorite of the five before we close for tonight? I really have seen Lost, but just discovered that the debate started at 7 instead of 8 and I’ve missed half of it!

Larry & Mimmye

See you in two weeks (whichever day it is!)

Dave & Pam

We are enjoying these sessions because they help us discover wines we probably would never try otherwise. So far, we haven’t had any bad picks…just wines we will buy again and again. Thanks to you Jennifer for starting this and to all the contributors and guest hosts for the selections.

Henrietta

Robert- I didn’t get a response, have you ever taken a trip to Italy?

Robert

Your not missing much just a love fest between the two nominees

denise

this is so much fun! we will be back next week..looking forward to bretts wine selection!

Robert

No Henery but I’m sure your going this year correct HR?

Jennifer Biggs

Dave, isn’t is nice to know that by the end of the year, we’ll have tasted 52 new wines?

Robert

Where did you all buy the wine for tonight?

Robert

Can any one tell me the what the Greek word Carpos means?

julie

Jen–TOLD you it was divine inspiration…must go feed the masses….Robert…AWESOME choice….thanks for the eddy cashun….can’t wait until next week…wed or thur?

denise

busters for me!

Henrietta

I am not sure who HR is, but I will take that as a no on the Italy question

Jennifer Biggs

Robert, I bought mine at Buster’s for $12.99 and when I was there, ran into friends who were buying the Tunnel of Elms chardonnay for $6.99! Bill at Buster’s said it was a phenomenal value, so I picked up a bottle but haven’t opened it yet.

Dave & Pam

52 wines and we will also start buying two at a time. So far, our favorite was In Fine. We must try their Red

Robert

No have not been but we do have plans for a trip next year so keep buying the “DOG” and we can go

julie

Robert…tried to google it and got more spanish than greek…solly!

Jennifer Biggs

Julie, next week is Thursday, as usual. I think we’ll go with Wednesday, Feb. 13 instead of Valentine’s Day, though. I’ll put it on the blog and in the paper.

Goodnight everyone, and thanks for joining! See you next Thursday.

Robert

Fruit! Carpineto is the winery name and the root word Means fruit. Just like Doja in Dogajolo menas wood stave.

Henrietta

I have enjoyed my time and wine shared with you all, but the Donald is calling and early meeting tomorrow am. see you all next week

Robert

The Donald love the Dogajolo

Robert

Julie did you have dinner with this choice?

Robert

Henry have you gone to Italy and have you visited the winery Carpineto?

Robert

Thanks for tasting/buying the wine guys!

Tim

I tried 5 different liquor / wine stores and could not find this bottle (or the bottle for next week). Could you include information on where to find the wine each week?

Jennifer Biggs

Tim, I can’t imagine why you couldn’t find this wine. If you’ll email me and tell me where you went, I’ll be sure that the store owners know to check online so they’ll know which wine we’re drinking each week. Send it to biggs@commercialappeal.com.

Last night I gave the wrong name for next week’s wine, although I correctly named it in my Wednesday column: It’s Lodi 2005 Jessie’s Grove Earth, Zin and Fire and the distributor tells me it should be eaily found, too.
