Frequent blogger Carole H just returned from a trip to Orlando, where she ate at Emeril’s Tchoup Chop and reports back that it was a visual and culinary delight. Pictured here is a coconut creme brulee with tuile cookie and strawberry/whipped cream garnish and bourbon pecan pie with house made vanilla bean ice cream.
Here’s what she has to say about it: “It is the most visually beautiful restaurant I’ve ever eaten at in my life. The food was exquisite & the service was near perfect. They don’t do a lot of lunch business & we were the only ones in there for awhile around noon. I think there were five different people bringing us things & clearing our table. They all wear Hawaiian type shirts & dark pants & there is an open chef’s table by the kitchen. The ceilings are very tall & there is a pool in the middle that becomes a fountain as the water spills over the end.”
We had shrimp chips w/an Asian peanut sauce dip & scallop ceviche, which were complimentary appetizers. The menu changes daily. I had kalua pork loco moco w/an omelet instead of a fried egg & it was served on top of fried rice. My friend had mahi mahi that she said was the best she ever ate (she has lived all over the country, incl. San Francisco). It had fried lotus root chips on top - not much taste but nice crunch. There was a mushroom sauce around it & it was perfectly cooked. She also had a green salad. Our entrees were $18/$19 & wine was $9/glass. ”

My husband and I eloped in Vegas, and our “wedding reception” was at Emeril’s in the MGM Grand. We, too, thought everything about it was exquisite…the food, the decor, and the service. We each had the most delectable Falls River Clam Chowder, we still talk about it! Everything was so enjoyable that we tried it a second time before we left, and found the second visit as delightful as the first!

I have been to the original Emeril’s in New Orleans & I’ve heard that the Emeril’s at Universal Studios in Orlando is more commercial than Tchoup Chop. I was interested in Tchoup Chop because I had seen an “Emeril Live” segment about the making of the restaurant & found it so interesting. The server told us that Emeril visited the restaurant about two wks. before he started working there a year ago, so he hasn’t met him yet. He had heard of but not seen the segment about how the restaurant was created. It is repeated occasionally on Food Network & I want to watch it again now that I have seen it in person. I went to Orlando for a retirement party & to visit my best friend. But going to Tchoup Chop was right up there with my favorite part of the trip - reconnecting with people I love.

Carole - this sounds like such a great experience. Thank you for sharing it with us. Being from La, I have been to all Emeril’s New Orleans restaurants but the original is the best. I have been to the Las Vegas restaurant and also the Miami Beach and have to say the I thought the FL outpost was better. Please take a camera and give us another report the next time you make a find like this.

Thank you, GrantParish. I should have mentioned those wonderful desserts were $6 each, although some on the menu were more elaborate and expensive. They also had some fancy drinks for $13.50 and we passed on those. My friend just sent me the address - Universal Orlando’s Royal Pacific Resort, 6300 Hollywood Way, Orlando, FL 32819. Online reservations are available at OpenTable.com.

I also used OpenTable.com to make a reservation at Tracht’s, a chophouse in Long Beach, Calif. A friend and I enjoyed a wonderful experience. We weren’t rushed and noshed on standout Coq au Vin and pot roast. For dessert, a full-throttle chocolate pudding that resembled a mousse. It was outrageous and decadent. Oh, nearly forgot to mention the standout Japanese purple yams. So sweet and smooth. I’ll submit some pictures.

Why is it called Tchop Chop if it doesn’t have anything to do with New Orleans? I thought it was a new steakhouse on Tchopoutilas ave.

I think Tchoup Chop is sort of a play on words to include Emeril’s New Orleans influence and also a name that has an Asian connotation.
