Best chef in Memphis

FK and I were asked today if any chef cooking in Memphis today should be nominated for a James Beard award this year. The person from the nomination committee had two chefs in mind, which I’ll name at a later date (I’m not sure if it’s a secret, so let me find out). But it made me start thinking about all the people we have cooking here. Who would you nominate?

I would have to agree with Mike and go with Wally Joe.

My vote is Wally Joe. He is probably the only chef in town with a national reputation, deservedly so.

Jose Guitierrez has a bit of a national reputation as well. He appeared on several cooking shows that were on Discovery Channel, I think. Also, we shouldn’t ignore Erling Jensen.

My vote is for Chef Brett “Shaggy” Duffee at Equestria!

Jose’ and Erling are great chefs. But most defintitely Wally Joe should be considered the best chef in Memphis. His cuisine is unforgettable…the bluefino o-toro, live fresh sea urchins, sub-lime pork belly..I could go on and on. His body of work from KC’s in Mississippi to now in Memphis qualifies him as the best.

Not wanting to look like a champ chaser, I would vote for Shaggy as well. I have been to Equestria 3 times since his take over. I found the food to be getting progressively better with each visit. Wally and Jose might have the reputations, but Shaggy is letting his pans do the talking and they are singing to me… Good Luck Shag..

Felicia Willett, I have yet to see another Chef in town dedicate their menu each season to support local farmers like Felicia

Without a doubt it’s Wally Joe. He is the most inovative chef in town.

Chef Rick Farmer is the best chef in Memphis
