Cafe Toscana opened for lunch a few weeks ago and my daughter and I spent a relaxing hour or so on the upstairs patio. I like Toscano anyway–it’s close to home and I honestly don’t know of better gnocchi anywhere; my daughter is addicted to it. Lunch was just as nice as dinner. We split an unusual version of panzanella for an appetizer (made with spelt instead of bread)–and still took more than half of it with us. Megan had the gnocchi with a cheese sauce (can you say groan? but in a good way?) and I went with a spaghetti bolognese. Both were great and even though we didn’t finish our meals, we still opted to share a dessert because they’re those wonderful, tiny little cups–just a few bites, really. I had my palate set on chocolate but when the server pointed out the “butter cake batter” mousse, Megan and I both immediately said we’d take it. Heaven!

Do you mean Cafe Toscana, with an “a” or does Memphis have another Italian restaurant with an upstairs patio named Cafe Toscano, with an “o”?
I hope you’re referring to the one on Black Road in the space formerly occupied by Aubergine. It sounds great and is close to my office. I will try lunch soon.

Wow, wouldn’t that be coincidental. Cafe Toscana, of course, the one on Black Road. And you’ll enjoy the lunch.

I haven’t tried the lunch yet but the dinners are great. The chef,Giacomo Ciabattini, won the equivalent of chef of the year in Italy. Try the Veal Carciofi - yum!

I love the breaded shrimp with angel hair pasta. There are other things I want to try there, but always end up getting that. I also love their bruschetta - it’s very simple and the bread with it is fabulous.
