I am surrounded by coffee drinkers. Most of my co-workers drink it all day, my daughter could probably pay rent on what she plunks down at Starbucks, and my husband is addicted. Honestly, he’ll heat a cup of yesterday’s coffee in the microwave to gulp while he waits for the morning coffee to brew. Yuck!
I’m good for two cups a day, maybe three on a lazy Sunday. And it’s only in the morning, just to get my eyes open. If my husband gets out of bed before me and has made it through his second cup of coffee, I just have to walk out of the room. He’s ready for full conversation while I’m still puzzling through a dream. It drives me nuts!
Anyway, I spotted this over the weekend when I was shopping, and I’m a little embarrassed to say that I’m trading in the little 10-cup, self-grinding coffee maker that I love for a HUGE 14-cup monster. This is a sacrifice, but it will–hopefully–keep Bob from having to brew two pots of coffee every morning. I guess the next step would have to be one of those silver commercial percolators…
And I’m once again giving though to switching to tea. I’ve tried several of the Taze morning teas and probably all of the standards over the years. I tend to drink herb teas at night instead of caffeine-filled ones in the a.m., but I’m open to suggestions. Know of any that’ll make my eyes pop?

I know it’s not fancy, but a good strong cup of English Breakfast tea my favorite coffee alternative. It’s not too fruity or fru fru, so I actually feel as if it may be helping me wake up. And I really do feel better drinking tea than coffee. The coffee is just too much.

FYI…
Coffee puts the system under the strain of metabolizing a deadly acid-forming drug, depositing its insoluble cellulose, which cements the wall of the liver, causing this vital organ to swell to twice its proper size. In addition, coffee is heavily sprayed. (Ninety-two pesticides are applied to its leaves.) Diuretic properties of caffeine cause potassium and other minerals to be flushed from the body.
All this fear went away when I quit, and it was a book that inspired me to do it called The Truth About Caffeine by Marina Kushner. There are five things I liked about this book:
1) It details–thoroughly–the ways in which caffeine may damage your health.
2) It reveals the damage that coffee does to the environment. Specifically, coffee was once grown in the shade, so that trees were left in place. Then sun coffee was introduced, allowing greater yields but contributing to the destruction of rain forests. I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere else.
3) It explains how best to go off coffee. This is important. If you try cold turkey, as most people probably do, the withdrawal symptoms will likely drive you right back to coffee.
4) Helped me find a great resource for the latest studies at CaffeineAwareness.org
5) Also, if you drink decaf you won’t want to miss this special free report on the dangers of decaf available at www.soyfee.com

If I’m doing tea, Earl Gray is the one for me in the morning. But you know, I’m a fine ole southern girl…and I still start every day first thing with a glass of Coca-cola!

Alright, Alyce
I have also been known to guzzle soft drinks in the morning. But my favorite tea is Bigelow Constant Comment. I recently found some in an iced tea form & enjoyed that as well. Very nice natural tasting orange & spice flavor. British folks wouldn’t approve, but I usually make two cups from one bag of Constant Comment. There are other similar ones on the market, including a Celestial Seasonings Mandarin Spice flavor & a Sunleaf Mandarin flavor. But you can actually see bits of what appears to be orange peel in the Constant Comment teabags. Try it…you’ll LIKE it!

Jennifer-
The Tazo awake blend keeps me going when I give up my traditional Diet Coke for Lent. It is also what Starbucks used in their black iced tea but they actually brew it double strength. A good cup of Earl Grey gives me a boost also.
