I love my animals–and Fredric’s got a bigger collection than we do, by the way, so we’re both animal lovers here. Like all pet owners, I was concerned when the news broke a few months ago about contaminated wheat gluten. Both the dog food and cat food we buy were OK, but I noticed that the dogs’ favorite treat contained wheat gluten. It wasn’t on the recalled list, but I threw them out anyway. Since then I’ve tried to bake a few treats and haven’t come up with anything they like very much. I’m mainly using peanut butter because I want the treats to be shelf-stable, not something I have to keep in the fridge. (They prefer food at room temperature. And the cat will NOT eat his food cold, so, uh, yeah, I have been known to take the chill off by popping it in the microwave.)
Any ideas, anyone? Something easy.

My miniature schnauzer doesn’t like any kind of dog treats I have found except those edible green chewy bones. They tried to give her a treat like a dog biscuit at the vet & she turned up her nose. She doesn’t like rawhide chews or pig ears or any of the other stuff most dogs love. She takes it by spells w/people food, but she’ll eat popcorn, rice, cooked noodles, bread, rolls, cornbread, English muffins or biscuits every time. She also likes the little gristly parts of chicken & rib tips. Most of the time she goes for plain saltine crackers or cheap vanilla wafers, as somebody referred to them on the post about guilty pleasures a few wks. back. She won’t touch a pretzel or bagel chip on a bet, & she takes it by spells with Cheez-Its, Wheat Thins, club crackers, Triscuits, & plain cereal like Chex or Cheerios. So if you get desperate, maybe one of those would work. I wouldn’t think any of them would have more fat than peanut butter. Most dogs love anything crunchy, but mine won’t eat potato or corn chips the majority of the time. My last schnauzer would eat anything I would share w/her, including fruit & vegetables. The only thing she ever turned down was a dill pickle. There was a list in Parade magazine a couple of Sundays ago about things not to feed pets & one of them was potato skins, which my dog loves. But the vet didn’t know why those are harmful, except that potato leaves are toxic. Cheese was on the list & my dogs have always liked it, but the vet said some dogs are lactose intolerant.

I always make peanut butter/flour treats at Christmas for my dog AND my granddogs. They all LOVE them. But here’s a link you might explore:

If you are looking for treats that you can buy prepared and don’t have to refrigerate, I highly recommend the Three Dog Bakery Itty Bitty Bones. Our dogs LOVE them. There is an acutal Three Dog Bakery out in Collierville that is makes treats fresh and is really a cool place to take your pup for an afternoon treat, but you can the Itty Bitty Bones at Kroger or other pet stores if Collierville is too far of a drive.

Little John’s Ani-mall on Germantown Parkway near Hueys-Cordova has a great selection of animal treats. SOme are cookies and some look like bagels.
The best place I have been that has pet treats is actually Aunt Sue’s in Chattanooga: http://www.auntsuesk9bakery.com/
I have not visited Wags and Whiskers on Sanderlin, ( http://www.wagswhiskers.com/index.htm? ) but
I am hoping is is comparable to Aunt Sue’s.

My Jack Russells have always loved red and green peppers and carrots so they usually get a few of them once a week. The minute the chopping board comes out they are in the kitchen! Other than that it is regular old Milk Bones.
