Yum in the deli

I went to Super-Lo on Colonial this weekend to pick up the rare roast beef I like so much and ended up buying a few prepared dishes for my mother-in-law. There’s a huge assortment of individual-size servings available in grab-and-go. I asked a woman who was shopping if she’s ever tried the food and she said yes, that it was great, and that “they write about them in the paper all the time.” Well, that was good enough for me…

I bought a few things for M-I-L and she liked them, so I went back. Yesterday afternoon I bought a quart of pork pot roast for $6.99 from the deli counter and we had it for dinner last night–and it was delicious. The woman who works there told me they make everything from scratch right in the store. I’m going to get more information; meanwhile, what are some of your favorite grocery take-outs?

Super-Lo Red Beans and Rice are really good. Particular favorites from Wild Oats include edamame caviar, blue cheese slaw and their roasted veggies.

The old, beloved Seesel’s had the BEST chicken salad, and nothing at Schuck’s even comes close.

They don’t have it all the time, but the bread pudding with vanilla sauce I have occasionally found at the Schnucks on Truse is really good. I think they must box up whatever they have left on the food bar. They keep it in the refrigerator case in the front of the store adjacent to the deli. I’m glad to hear about the deli at Super-Lo because I haven’t tried it.

Whole Foods Southwest King Ranch Casserole is one of my favorite deli comfort foods. I also love their Hawaiian Drummettes.

The roasted salmon at the Schnucks deli on Perkins is tasty, and no more expensive than those prepackaged salmon snacks you find in most seafood sections.

I’m also very fond of the various roast chicken options at Fresh Market.

The deli at the kroger on sanderlin has an excellent variety of freshly made salads by arie.

I went to Super-Lo yesterday after Jennifer’s recommendation, & was happy to see they also have handicapped carts available now. I tried turkey salad, which was on special this wk., meatloaf, & cornbread dressing. The turkey salad is in round plastic containers of varying weights. It reminds me somewhat of the seasoning for crab salad, which they also have, along with chicken salad & ham salad. The cornbread dressing had a little bit too much sage for my taste, but it was a good texture & was seasoned well otherwise. I added leftover chicken to mine, but they also have rotisserie chickens that would be good to have with the dressing. The meatloaf was the dense type with tomato sauce on top & also quite tasty. I plan on trying it next as a sandwich. The dressing & meatloaf were in small rectangular aluminum tins with plastic tops that people use to bake mini loaves of bread for holiday gift giving. Portions are perfect for a single person as several meals or two people for one meal. I also saw chicken & dumplings, chicken pot pie, several forms of fried chicken nuggets, wings & tenders, cornbread & muffins, soup, the red beans & rice that Molly recommends, several varieties of slaw, potato salad, quiche, pudding with whipped topping, Jello-O salad with fruit, a few vegetables & green salads. Most of the things in aluminum tins were a fixed price & all the same size of each item. My only quibble was no heating guidelines - you just have to experiment on your own. I put mine on plates & microwaved them, but the tins could also be heated in a conventional or toaster oven. I’ll definitely go back & try some other things. I’m sure the selection varies, & I’ll ask if they have certain things on certain days. It was a great find for me.
