For those of you who don’t already know, Jimmy Lewis has pulled the plug on Jimmy’s Market. He’d planned to open his store this winter in the former Burke’s location on Poplar, just across from his old Squash Blossom. But it’s not to be. In an email, Lewis said that one of the reasons he’s changed his mind is because Whole Foods has acquired Wild Oats and that he knows better than to compete with the market leader.
Still no official word on what’s happening with Wild Oats/Whole Foods in Memphis.

arghghghghghgh! i had just seen a (relatively) new sign go up on the building, and i was beginning to hope it might really happen. i kind of think he could have been successful…i don’t really like to go past highland, so i don’t go to wild oats much. but i guess me and my tuppence can’t necessarily support a business.

Jimmy’s msg. mentioned the fact that there was potential for at least three Whole Foods stores in Memphis, & that they were going to keep the Poplar location. Of course, as Jennifer said, that isn’t official yet. I would LOVE to see one in Midtown or downtown, but there’s the problem of available real estate. I would vote for the old Friday’s/Garcia Wells/Studebaker’s site in Overton Square, but that’s probably just dreaming. More likely than not, they would be looking at Cordova, Collierville or Germantown.

I’ve heard they are looking at the former Tower Records in Peabody Place.
