I was driving out east on Poplar last week, toward Kirby Parkway, and I spotted a Petra Cafe (754-4440) in the Carrefour shopping center, on the side facing Poplar. “That’s new,” I thought, and it turns out that the Greek restraurant has been there three-and-a-half or four months. It’s a branch of the Petra Cafe in Collierville. So last Friday we went to have dinner and were reasonably content. There’s no wine, but the restaurant does not charge corkage if you bring in your own. I had to jump back in the car and race to the nearest wine store. Greek salads were pretty standard, but they were fresh and and crisp and generously sprinkled with tangy feta cheese. Dolmades, grape leaves stuffed with ground sirloin and rice, are available as appetizer and entree; cooked in a garlic, lemon and lamb broth, they’re delicious. A good way to try a selection of menu items is the Petra Sampler. We weren’t terrifically pleased with the “thinly sliced gyro meat” — it just tasted like “meat” — but the spanokopita, the olives, the hummus and other dips were very good; the pita bread was particularly fresh. In a serving suitable for a whole Greek chorus, the pastitio — a casserole of macaroni and beef topped with a custard-like cheese sauce — was a show-stopper. We took home half and ate it for lunch the next day. Still to be tried: lamb and beef dishes.

I’ve been eating at the Petra in Collierville since it opened, and it is a nice jem in suburbia. Their gyros are probably the best I’ve ever had, and the prices are more than reasonable.

I used to eat at the Petra at Stage and Germantown Pkwy and always enjoyed their potato salad as well. It must be a popular dish since, if you did not order the potato salad early, they always ran out by mid-afternoon!
