Christopher Blank is on a barbecue team this year and he’s going to be blogging from the contest, starting late today. To get to his blog, click here.
Click on the MIM BBQ logo, and make sure you check out his story in today’s Food section. He’s a funny guy! You can get to it from the same site–click on picture of the guy flat out on his back.

Great story & I can’t wait to read the continuing saga! One of my former co-workers was on a team every yr. & he would invite the whole ofc. to come down for ‘cue one day before the judging began. One yr. I was unable to go due to having had foot surgery, & he was kind enough to send me a CARE pkg. They never won, but they drank a lot of beer & had a mighty fine time. Hopefully, Tuesday’s hail & rain will prevent what might have happened this wk-end based on BBQ contest weather in previous years. No matter how many times I watch Al Roker’s BBQ contest shows, they never fail to amuse. He claims he first became really interested in BBQ as a result of his experiences here during Memphis in May.

I was in the Memphis area a month ago and I decided to check on my BBQ roots. I went to the Coleman’s BBQ in Hernando MS> Many a Memphian cut their teeth on Loebs or Coleman’s BBQ in the late 60’s. Coleman designed Loebs BBQ and went on to create Chis own brand, Coleman’s BBQ .
Actually the Q tasted the same as I remembered. One unique thing of some BBQ places is mustard slaw instead of mayo slaw or vinegar slaw. The mustard slaw flavor mixes well with the Q and sauce. I ordered it chopped.

Before moving to Memphis in 1987, I heard about the MIM BBQ contest and couldn’t wait to attend. I eagerly headed downtown for my first visit to the BBQ Fest and loved seeing all the rigs and the teams with their creative and festive costumes and decorations.
It was a brutally hot day and I was famished so I couldn’t wait to dig into some great ‘cue. Then I slowly began to realize that if you didn’t know someone on a team so you could be invited to eat you were out of luck - “BBQ everywhere and not a bit to eat.” I went home dejected and hungry after my first and last trip to the MIM BBQ contest.
