Doughnuts

Seems like there are doughnut shops all over the place–there’s a new-ish one on Poplar, the one on Union changed its name a while back, and I swear I think there are two right around the corner from each other somwhere around Summer Ave. Do you have a favorite? National Doughnut Day is coming up–I want to find the best doughnut in town!

I’ve never met a doughnut I didn’t like, but my former co-workers also swore by Gibson’s (on Mt. Moriah?) I miss Thornton’s, MacLaurine’s, Federal Bakery, & the old Lowenstein’s downtown, which was a Radefeld’s. I came by this body honestly :-)

PaulK

I third the motion. Gibson’s has the best donuts in town.

Don

O’Susanna’s in Collierville has the best. The doughnuts are light and feel like they don’t have all the fat. I have not tasted a bad doughnut yet and the Apple Fritters are incredible. If you have not been there, you need to try them out.

Sylvia Houston

My family loves Gibson’s Doughnuts on Mendenhall.

Jane

The real story in doughnuts is what time you can actually buy them when they are still warm. That’s when they’re the best.

Laurie

I’m up in Rhode Island where donut shops are on every block, but I hunger for the donuts from Oh Susanna’s in Collierville!

Deb Fouts

I love Oh! Susanna’s Donuts & Pastries off Poplar in Collierville. The overall concept is great - always met with a warm greeting - great donuts/pastries - super coffee - lots of room and a homey atmosphere. They even have an extra big table where you can get together for a meeting if need be, and a couple of cushiony chairs if you want to read your paper and set a spell. Oh! Susanna’s is THE place to satisfy your donut craving!!

Lorinda

My absolute favorite donut place in Shelby County is Oh! Susanna’s in Collierville. They have THE BEST donuts around. I’ve taken a few home, cut them up in smaller pieces and frozen them to be reheated later! Yum ~

Carol Bregenzer

Personally, Gibson’s on Mendenhall has ALWAYS had the best doughnuts!! Nice people, too.

Mimi Lipscomb

If you’ve never tried O Susanna’s donuts in Collierville, you have missed a great treat.Although it’s realitively new to the doughnut scene in the Memphis area, it’s making an impact with the food and friendly service.

I lived in Memphis over 50 years and I can tell you that Oh! Susanna’s Donuts & Pastries in Collierville has the most delicious donuts I have ever eaten……and it’s a beautiful shop as well……….Nice people!

Wow, the W&D web site gets better and better! In Jackson TN we are fortunate to have a Dunkin Donut and a -great- local place called DO Dahs Donuts. The Do Dahs Donut just melts in your mouth. Do Dahs is slowly replacing Krispy Kreme and Dunkin in the local service stations in Jackson.

Do Dahs is hard to find, it is in a large strip shopping mall at 169a Stonebrook Pl, but there is always a line waiting to get donuts.

Carole H

I vote for the apple fritters from Dunkin Donuts in Jackson for best outside of Memphis, & also the pineapple fritters from Bootsie’s Barn there, altho it isn’t specifically a doughnut shop. I’ll be sure to check out Do Dahs the next time I’m there.

Shannon

My absolute favorites are the ones done by the Friends of the Pink Palace, during the Crafts Fair! What makes them even better is the fact that you can only get them once a year, but boy, are they good!

Fred

I agree Carole H, he Fritters at Dunkin Doughnuts are really good! They will even heat it up for you! Add a Dunkin cup of coffee with a real shot of cream, and its heaven.

I think you are referring to Brooksie’s Barn on Oil Well Road in Jackson. It is a great Fish, BBQ, fried chicken Buffet place. They have excellent deserts. With all the restaurants in Jackson, it is still a popular choice.

I remember Thornton’s, but does anybody remember the old Harlow’s Honey Fluff Doughnuts On Elvisd Prelsey near the old Bellvue Drive in?

Carole H

Yes, I vaguely remember Harlow’s. I find it interesting that nobody has mentioned Krispy Kreme doughnuts - too commercial? Thanks for correcting me about Brooksie’s, Fred - that’s the place I was thinking about in Jackson. Has anybody tried Paula Deen’s Krispy Kreme doughnut bread pudding recipe? It is excess on top of excess, but it looks like it would be an incredible mouthful of sugar rush.

Bill

O’ Susanna’s is the greatest. Their donuts are awesome not to mention their selection of other pastries. If you have not tried them, you need to go check them out. We have out of state friends that visit and O’Susanna’s is a place we have to go by when they are here.

Sarai

I LOVE Oh! Susanna’s!!! They have great birthday parties with a huge birthday donut for sa cake and donut school. Both kids and adults have lots of fun. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. They have awsome customer service.

Fred

Carole H., I looked up the recipe. It looks pretty rich. I thought Id print it for the daring person to make.

Bill Nicholson’s “Decadent Bread Pudding” recipe as seen on Paula Deen’s cooking show

Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding

2 dozen (stale) Krispy Kreme donuts*
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
2 (4.5-ounce) cans fruit cocktail (undrained)
2 large eggs, beaten
1 (9-ounce) box golden raisins
Pinch salt
1 or 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Butter Rum Sauce (recipe follows)

1. Generously grease a 13 x 9-inch glass baking dish.
2. Cube donuts into prepared baking dish.
3. Mix remaining ingredients together and pour over doughnuts and let soak for about 30 minutes (or cover and place in refrigerator overnight).
4. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350*F.
5. Bake for about 1 hour until center is firm. Serve warm with Butter Rum Sauce drizzled over individual servings.

Makes 12 servings.

*If Krispy Kremes are not unavailable in your area, you can substitute with other glazed doughnuts. However, you should take into consideration that a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut is about 3/4 the size of other well-known glazed doughnuts, so you may only need about 1 1/2 dozen of the other brand.

Butter Rum Sauce

1/2 cup butter
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
Rum, to taste

1. Melt butter and slowly stir in powdered sugar. Add rum to taste, and heat until bubbly. Pour over individual servings of the bread pudding.

For those of you who missed growing up in Frayser, there is NO question. Tas-T-O’s doughnuts are/were the best. After the store closed, I have found that there is a store in Arlington that bought the recipe for these doughnuts and opened a few months back. Like they say in Selmer…..It’s worth the Drive!!!!

Carol

It’s worth the drive from Brighton, Tn. to go to Tas T O’s donuts in Arlington. They are the best donuts you will ever put in your mouth.

Try them out. You will never go anywhere else.

I AM A DONUT LOVER BUT HAVE NEVER LIKED THE TASTE OF KRISPY KREME, WHICH SEEMS TO HAVE SATURATED THE MEMPHIS ARE. BUT THEN, A NEW SHOP OPENED UP, “TASTY CREAM DONUTS” AT 5030 POPLAR, EAST OF MENDENHALL, NEAR CLARK TOWER. THEY ARE REALLY FRESH AND GOOD, WITH A NICE VARIETY AND PRETTY SMILES FROM THE FRIENDLY OWNERS. THEY ALSO HAVE SPECIALS FOR THEIR REPEAT CUSTOMERS. I BUY DONUTS FOR MY CHURCH FUNCTIONS AND GET LOTS OF RAVES AND COMPLIMENTS. TRY IT AND YOU’LL AGREE !

If you have never tried the Shipley DoNuts - in particular the chocolate filled donuts - you have not lived - for chocaholics they are nirvana in a delicious donut! The closest Shipley to Memphis is on Goodman Road - and it is WORTH THE DRIVE!!!!

TeeCee

two words DUNKIN’ DONUTS ‘nuf said.

Scott

Oh! Susanna’s is the absolute best donut, ever. Period. They are sorta like Gibson’s, but way better. Nothing like KK or DD. You owe it to yourself to drive to Collierville and check them out. Hurry while they still have the pumpkin spice donut. Yum! Also, you get a custom blend of Ugly Mug coffee that you can’t get anywhere else.

Leslie

Oh! Susanna’s doughnuts are BY FAR the best. It is a beautiful atmosphere with a brilliant showcase of the best doughnuts and pastries I have evere eaten.

Gary

I just found this post/blog or whatever it’s called and had to respond. My dad worked at the Harlow’s Honey Fluff Donuts on Elvis D Presley near the old Bellvue drive in. When I was a kid I got to stand on a milk carton and flip the donuts in the deep fryer with a pair of drum sticks. It was a great thing to do and we used to get fresh Harlow’s donuts right off the glaze line. That was the best for me.
