I got so hungry reading Jennifer Biggs’ review on a new hot spot just down the road from Memphis… I’ve been eating lots of Thai food in Seattle, thinking that of all the Asian cooking traditions to carve out a place in the mainstream, Thai surely tops Korean, Vietnamese, maybe someday soon, even Chinese…
What’s your fave Thai eats? Has anyone been to the place Jennifer wrote about? Do you agree or disagree with her assessment?

I’ve tried the Thai at Jasmine, and it was great…but the absolute best of all in Memphis is Bhan Thai. From the cocnut tum kah, to the siam beef, and the upside down key lime pie…it doesn’t get any better than this!

The chai-spiced with ginger crust cheesecake in this month’s Bon Apetite is really good. Anyone priced cardamom lately? Holy smokes! It is just me or has Bhan Thai been going downhill?

I agree with Marsha - Bhan Thai is it for me too. No Sluggo Dave, I found some reasonable ground cardamom recently at World Market. They also have it at Fresh Market in a smaller amt. & at Penzey’s. What you see in grocery stores is definitely out of sight pricewise.

Sawaddii downtown on Union has the best pad thai dishes. The restaurant is beautiful on the inside, and is never very crowded (a blessing for the patrons but a curse for the owner, I’m sure).

Does anyone know where to find kaffir lime leaves in Memphis? I’ve been looking at Wild Oats, Fresh Market and any and all small asian stores in Midtown…….

Have not been, but Jennifer’s review has placed the restaurant in my “need to go” list. Ihave been to a new restaurant that opened at Kirby just north of the Bill Morris in the Kroger shopping center called “Hibachi”. Very nice lunch menu for those of us who like Japanese food. A “bento box” runs between 7 and 8 dollars and includes, besides the main dish, a Califorina roll, tempura vegetables, a salad and fried rice. They also have a good sushi menu including both sashimi and nigiri. Website is: www.hibachiusa.com.
