Getting excited about groceries

There’s a Whole Foods in my new neighborhood!

Is this the sign of a true food nerd? Getting a thrill about cases of pretty produce (are those chiogga beets??)… and pristine seafood (smoked scallops? oh, yeah…) and MRTE that look as if they belong on an upscale menu.

Fellow shoppers probably thought Claire and I were some kind of bumpkins, taking pics… don’t care.

Course I’ve heard the “Whole Paycheck” yuck-yuck rub, but some things are worth paying for, no? Last night, roasted a “free-range” Rosie chicken (the door’s over there, guys if you care to check out the barnyard… or, that’s right, you’re not smart enough to figure out how to roam range free…), with baby creamer potatoes and glazed carrots… all tasting so fine with a Waterbrook chardonnay, on sale for $9.

I adore my Whole Foods. Organic grass fed beef? Yes, please!

The thing is, the people who use the “Whole Paycheck” joke are also assuming that you’re not buying store brands. A lot of the Whole Foods store brands aren’t priced much more than your average grocery store and are far better quality.

Of course, I won’t skimp on meats and seafood, and I’m willing to pay for the good stuff.

You move away, only to look back and taunt.

Seriously, it sounds like you are enjoying it. Glad to get these updates. How long with they last?

I just came back from Easy Way on Cooper with a two lb. bag of carrots - chiogga beets sound much more exotic :-) You enjoy your shopping, Leslie, staring rude people or not! They are the ones who are leading a dull, dreary existence, taking for granted a Whole Foods Market like that. Your shopping experiences are infinitely more special than theirs, & don’t let them spoil your fun!

Oh how I miss Whole Foods and its Atlanta predecesor Harry’s. If you watch “Good Eats” at all - Alton is often at Harry’s for the great produce and fish. I miss it terribly.

I miss Whole Foods too. Even their deli selections are good. Their roasted beets, healthier potato salads… mmmmm…

I also like their great cheese selection. The only way you will get such a great cheese selection in Memphis is if you go to all three:

1. Fresh Market
2. Wild Oats
3. Mantia’s!!

Ok, Ill give Mantia’s a break. They can’t have like every since great cheese around since it would be too much in their little shop and they DO have a nice selection, but I still miss Whole Foods!

Any update on the rumors that a Whole Foods was coming to Memphis/Collierville? Anyone? Bueller?
