Happy New Year!

This was my view at lunch on New Year’s Eve, on top of Aspen Highlands’ Cloud 9 Bistro… an incredible thrill to sit outside and feast on the gorgeous Maroon Bells.

I’ve skiied at this area a bunch and have always wanted to try this spot, but I do love the old-school lodge so much… today, though, while Johnny hiked up the Highlands Bowl (extreme, extreme, hardcore only), I indulged in an order of free-range coq au vin with a glass of French pinot.

I can’t remember enjoying a more memorable meal on the slopes!

How about you? What did you eat to ring out the old, ring in the new??

Saturday night had a bone-in filet at Flemings. It cost a fortune but I can’t remember ever having a piece of beef that was that incredible. The french onion soup, wedge salad and pomme frites were also extremely good. It cost…but it really was a fine meal.

New Years Eve we went to Felecia’s. The place was full of life and the food was standard setting. A composed lobster salad that had flavor on top of flavor. The redfish was perfectly cooked and the lumpcrab that topped it made the evening a wonderfully rich experience. Then there was the whiskey sauce with the chocolate chocolate bread pudding. The fixed price came with hats and noise makers and she had a band in the lobby of BP. It seemed everyone enjoyed the company of those they came with more than going out in to an open lobby. She rented banquettes and had bars and dance floors. The effort was great and cost $25 per person extra but no one seemed to care. The food and atmosphere in the restaurant seemed to be enough.

Too many invites today to keep up with but at some point we’ll get out and eat some peas and greens. Happy New Year to all…those in Memphis and those traveling west.

I made homemade chicken enchiladas for our little group of 8. We also munched on some blue cheese dip and meatballs I made.

How was the French pinot you had with the dinner? I can’t remember the last French wine I had. I have gotten stuck on those Aussie Shiraz wines. Plus

We are also trying all the local domestics in the TN IL, MO, AR region.

Our next trek is to Ste Genevieve, MO to the Crowne Valley Winery , the Sanite Genevieve Winery, the Chaumette Winery, Charleville Winery, and Hemman Winery.

What I have learned is that I actually like some of these local small wineries.

Here are my favorites: Highland Manor om Jamestown TN, Beachaven in Clarksville TN, Stonehaus in Crossville TN, Wiederkehr Wine Altus AR, Mount Bethel Winery Aktus AR, Post WInery, Altus AR, and Key Spring in Hampshire TN.

Sunday night I’d originally intended to go to the big New Year’s bash at Automatic Slim’s, but it sounded so noisy over the phone that I opted for Yia Yia’s instead. I ate at the bar to avoid a long wait for a table, which worked out great as it allowed me to get my dinner before some kitchen problems developed (still don’t know what that was about, but my food was superb), and gave me a ringside seat for some jaw-dropping misbehavior by other customers.
