Lost recipe: found!

Got a call from Peggy, who was upset because she had lost a recipe for tea cakes. “I make them every year for the holidays and take them to nursing homes,” she said. The old-fashioned recipe reminded her of her mother was lost in a move. (Boy, can I relate to that!)

Thanks to our incredible librarian Rosemary Nelms, that recipe has been found:

MAMMA’S TEA CAKES

1/2 cup butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 cup milk

2 tsp. baking powder

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Cream butter. Add sugar gradually, followed by well-beaten egg, milk and flavoring. Sift dry ingredients and add to first mixture. Roll out mixture to about 1/4 -inch thickness, cut with round cutter and bake on a greased pan or baking sheet in a hot oven (375 to 400 degrees).

Doesn’t that sound good? What’s your favorite Christmas cookie?

Response to “Lost recipe: found!”

Tim

I’ll never bake another cookie again since I found Laura Barrett at Bun in the Oven.

She debuted at MFM this summer and has just completed a week of incredible work in the tearoom at the Memphis Heritage Holiday Design Showcase.

Her delectables are simply amazing. She’s humble, too. I asked if she created the items and she admitted that most of them are recipes from friends and family and some of them come from cookie swaps that her mother participated in.

Then there’s her cakes and breads. Absolutely amazing. All from scratch and really beautiful.

If you don’t want to mess up the kitchen and need more time to enjoy the holidays…let Laura do the work. She also does a great tea box or party box for office parties or ladies luncheons. Nothing is mass produced so don’t expect to call at the last minute.

Tell her Tim told you to call. You won’t be disappointed.
