Plop, plop, fizz/fizz

Was it the gumbo or the Cajun chili I slurped at lunch at Bluff City Bayou? Or the 40 tons of stress sitting on my stomach? I’m a poster child for heartburn aids this afternoon…

I cajoled my buddy Dave to dig into his stash of ginger ale… close, but still feeling the burn.

Forgot my Tums at home… darn. In extreme cases, I’ll even quaff a baking soda cocktail… (perfect prep for those burping contests!)

What works for you when there’s a fire in your gut?

A couple drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water is my usual remedy, or putting a couple drops on a sugar cube and sucking on it.

For immediate relief, something like Tums or Rolaids, neither of which were available Saturday night after I arrived in Beijing and had the spiciest of Schezuan.

Maalox, Gaviscon, Alkamints, or Gas-X, any of the chewable stuff or pills (not the wretched liquids like Pepto Bismol!) There is also a cola syrup available at places like Champion Pharmacy, & a lot of people swear by it. But I haven’t tried that so can’t attest to it.

Oddly, french fries.

Leslie, I carry a small roll or Tums or Rolaids that have non-offensive flavors (berry, no thanks) in my purse and even my 5 yr. old asks from time to time! At home remedy is of course saltines and ginger ale. and time…..

Swedish bitters and soda have always treated me well. About a tablespoon of the bitters and two ounces of soda water slurped like a shot usually does the trick.

While antacid tablets would be my first choice when available, I’ve found eating something bland like good old tasteless white bread will do the trick in a pinch.
