Little Rock report

Took a quick trip to that charming town today… and had a spectacular experience at a place called Boulevard Bread Company… run by chef Scott McGehee who used to work at Chez Panisse.

Really cool gourmet goodies and manna from heaven! Baguettes, ciabatta, foccacia, whole wheat sourdough and more… loaded up the car with stuff that smelled so good, including kickin’ jambalaya.

Definitely worth the trip.

Any opinions on Little Rock as a food destination?

I’m duty-bound to mention my cousin’s restaurant Loco Luna on Old Cantrell Road. It’s mid-range Italian and bar & grill fare. Last time I was there the Thai salad was very tasty.

Iriana’s Pizza on West Markham has great pizza, probably the best in Little Rock. Across the street is the River Market, with all kinds of dining and shopping options.

Sadly the Capital Hotel is closed for rennovations-its restaurant Ashley’s at the Capital was maybe the nicest in the whole city.

Hi Leslie,

I discovered Boulevard a few Little Rock trips back and every time I pass through LR I stop there. Their breads are better than their pastries. They have a nice little supply of cheeses and other items for a picnic, and their sandwhiches are pretty good.

So when I visit Little Rock and find a plce like Boulevard, and Nashville has Provence Bakery, I always ask; “Why doesn’t Memphis have a decent bakery like this”?

US Pizza Company (all around the city) is fantastic. I believe it was the inspiration for our Memphis Pizza Cade chain.

Ashley’s is very, very good.

You have to make a trip to Doe’s, just to say you’ve been there.

I have good friends in Little Rock & usually visit several times a year. I have been to Loca Luna & it had great food, along with a quirky, upbeat atmosphere. Other favorite spots are Trios, Capers, & La Scala. U. S. Pizza is particularly good & I also like a Chinese restaurant called Forbidden City that is in one of the malls. They are supposed to get a Pei Wei soon & they tend to get the same chain restaurants we usually get here. I still miss Cassinelli’s, which was an excellent Swiss & Italian restaurant that has sadly closed since I got hooked on it.
