Saw Cat Power — and a slew of incredibly talented Memphis musicians — at Young Avenue Deli last night… a great show.
After, wandered over to Beauty Shop and had a bunch of antipasti: a wonderful assortment of meats and cheeses, beets with goat cheese and fried onions.
What a fun night! A Wednesday…

I am having a difficult time developing any sustained interest in this singer. Her interviews all seem to be about how depressed she is or has been recently. And that she is feeling a little better now. She seems too this year’s (yes, we all know you lived in a van) Jewel. Is Cat’s music any good - is it interesting, and if so how? Is it depressing? Just curious. And also, CAT POWER? That’s hard to get far enough past to invest any attention. Maybe if I hear good things from y’all…

She’s good, NSD(C). Nothing like Jewel. I believe her depression issues were substance related and she apparently has kicked it. Her name is Chan Marshall…goes by Cat Power. I don’t like cats so I think if it more like the bulldozer.

So she played the Deli last night? And she’s at the New Daisy tonight?

She was REALLY good at the New Daisy last night. Bonus that it was Teenie’s birthday and he did “Since You’ve Been Gone” with 20 or so family members dancing on stage. They had a blast.
Chan was pretty amazing too. Great, great voice and supported by some of the best musicians in the world. They were tight.
Did she have the horns, strings and backup singers at the deli? The stage was huge and packed at the New Daisy. I was really impressed and her voice helped me get over her onstage presence that’s sometimes distracting. Glad to see she apparently has her demons behind her.

We were at Beauty Shop Wednesday night too, noshing before screening Borat at Studio on the Square. Tried a couple of starter/app type things along with the cheese plate. Finished with a late dessert at Side Street after the movie.
