… meat pie festival in Natchitoches, in mid-September.
Love every version I’ve had of this savory treat… found a recipe on the festival’s Web site. Made me wonder if Cornish pasties ever show up in this part of the world? A meat pie favored by miners… Or, where can I get a decent pierogie?

Owen Brennan’s serves spicy and delicious fried pies with a crawfish etouffee sauce as a lunch special on Tuesdays only. You get their fine bread, of course, and substitute brabant potatoes for the bland veggies and rice, and you’ve got one great $7.95 lunch.

In the interest of encouraging diverse opinions, I have to say that the phrases “meat pie” and “meat loaf” are two of the most disgusting I’ve ever ever ever heard. Having said that, I will say that my mom’s homemade chicken pot pie is divine. Love in a homemade crust. No Veg-All to be found.

I was so very, very disappointed in the paula Deen cooking show at the Mid-South Fair. I attended on Friday afternoon. She did not cook one thing! not one! I would really like my money back. She was funny & I enjoyed her personality but I paid for a cooking show. Anyone else as disappointed as I?

I missed your posting on Natchitoches Meat Pies while on vacation but hope it is not to late to weigh in with my personal account. I went to college in Natchitoches. As soon as my friends and I could scrape together a few bucks, we abandoned the dorm for Lasyone’s Meat Pie Kitchen. The pies were wonderful pastries filled with spiced pork and we were over there for lunch about twice a week.
Lasyone’s was the “inventor” of the Natchitoches Meat Pie. It was my favorite college eating place and I always ordered the meat pie and often a slice of the Cane River Cream Pie. The Lasyone’s website at http://www.lasyones.com has a history of the place along with information on the publications - like Gourmet and The New Yorker - that have written about the Natchitoches Meat Pies.
