Coming soon: wine from China

A name famously associated with port — Broadbent, as in Bartholomew and Michael — is tapping into the world’s latest yet-to-be explored wine region. (By the way, this is a bonafide scoop… first time it’s been announced anywhere… take that Robert Parker!)

Early next year, Broadbent Selections will import the first Chinese wines to this country… a producer Dragon’s Hollow, which makes varietals such as chardonnay, riesling and cabernet sauvignon. Bartholomew Broadbent tasted them last year at the country’s first wine expo, where he was a speaker. “They make a lot of wine in China and most of it is really terrible, but this winery fit in with our mission of high quality, eclectic and family owned,” Broadbent told me during an interview Thursday afternoon.

He’s in Memphis to show off his stellar portfolio, and will be special guest at a port tasting at Erling Jensen tonight.

What really impressed me, though, is Broadbent’s commitment to finding wines that won’t bust your budget. Check out the mission statement on his site broadbent-wines.com. Preaching to the choir!

I’m always on the hunt for bargains. There’s a difference between good value and cheap… What’s your latest/greatest score on wines under $20?

I don’t even like chardonnay much, but I really love Liberty School’s chardonnay.

I also find Ravenswood’s Vintner’s Blend Zinfandel to be a good, easy to drink and enjoyable wine.

I have a few favorites, one is Schloss Vollrads Riesling from Germany, all I can say is WOW. At $18.00 it’s a little pricy, but well worth it. It has a beautiful creamy texture, and the fruit is nice and soft. At only 10% alcohol it’s also great for lunch or brunch. Riesling is probably my favorite white wine, I think it’s so approachable. No matter what you are eating, you can always find a perfect Riesling to match. From bone dry to very fruit forward, this great wine will never let you down.
