Ready for Mid-South Fair fare?

A couple of years ago, I went to the fair and ate myself silly and wrote a front page story… I’ve never been to a fair that had so much stuff served “on a stick”… forget the deep-fried Twinkies! My top picks were Uncle Lou’s fried chicken and the red beans and rice made by Memphis Amateur Athletes.

What’s your favorite fair food? Oh, and did I mention I’ve got a little something special for the first 10 people who answer? (No, not a stuffed animal!!)

I’ve always loved candied apples, and I would get one at the fair. However, as I’ve gotten older, dental work has taken the joy out of the candied apples! Most of the time, I get a bratwurst at the booth that is over by itself on the way to the barns. I still usually have a Fiddlestick ice cream because it is my mom’s favorite. My husband hits the first Pronto Pup stand we come across, and that is just his appetizer!

I’m pretty fond of getting anything fried at the fair, but funnel cakes are my fave. I’m also partial to the roasted corn on the cob and caramel apples.

First off, I read the blog everyday and very much enjoy it! Honestly you can’t wrong with any of the selections from Uncle Lou’s. However, I always start with the Roasted Corn on the Cob from Shucks grilled corn, followed by a big juicy turkey leg all washed down with a large glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade.

my favorite thing is the chicken on a stick. We usually pair this with corn on the cob from Aw Shucks! and some Amish made ice cream to end the meal. Yum! can’t wait!!!!!

Diane

As simple as it is, I love the roasted corn the best!

Jim

The Amish vanilla ice cream

Susan

Nothing. Nothing. Nothing compares to a hot funnel cake…my favorite Fair Fare since I was a little girl! Yum!

Hmm…favorite fair food…that’s tough to choose from! The sweet corn on the cob, the ham n’ biscuits, the pronto pups…but my all time favorite fair food was the hamburger from the Treadwell High School Boosters booth. Sadly, they haven’t been there the last few years, but I still remember and crave that char-broiled burger with grilled onions.

The chicken on a stick. I look for it at every festival, and it is so good, but so bad for you. It is chicken on a stick deep fried and then there is some good honey mustard sauce that you eat with it.

Gotta be a toss-up between fiddlesticks ice cream bars & pronto pups. But there’s lots of other good stuff out there too. I sure wouldn’t turn down gyros, funnel cakes, or cotton candy.

Uncle Lou’s honey dipped chicken wings and a fresh squeezed lemonade make for excellent fair fare every year.

I love the frozen chocolate bananas, roasted corn, and the spiral cut plate-o-fried-taters. But the best thing of all is the sweet potato pie served up at the scout troop - tasty and cheap!

My faves? Pronto pup, funnel cake for dessert, cotton candy for a snack. I haven’t seen my MOST favorite thing in years…I guess it didn’t go over well and vanished? I don’t recall if it had a name. If anyone has seen it, please advise: a stick of cheese dipped in pronto pup batter and fried! Junk food at its finest!

Tim

Remarkableservice…please note that it wasn’t just any stick of cheese…it was Velveeta!!! I grew up eatin’ “Cheese Pups” from the local Dairy Bar. Oh my, they were so good. The mustard they serve is twice as strong as French’s and simply divine.

Leslie, next time the blog slows take note of this thread. If you offer give aways people that’ve never been to the fair log on and tell their favorite foods.

For me, it’s a starch fest. Spiral cut potatoes (we ask for them burnt), corn on the cob, bratwurst with onions and peppers and a funnel cake. We get all that and go watch whoever’s on stage. We’ve seen Carrot Top, Chaka Khan and one year we went to the rodeo to see Aaron Tippin.

We also look at the livestock as all good MS boys do. Then I have to go look at the horticulture entries. Food and flowers…nothing better.

Carole

I remember that cheese on a stick fried in pronto pup batter too - yum! Now that everybody else is coming up w/their favorites, I also recall the roasted corn & the sweet potato pie & candy apples. I pulled out a crown on a front tooth with something sticky like that a couple of yrs. ago & had to go around the ofc. most of the day looking like a hillbilly. When I got to the dentist, he asked what kind of Halloween candy I’d been eating - bingo!

Carole

Two friends from the ofc. where I used to work near Humphreys & Walnut Grove went all the way to the fair & back today just to eat lunch. They reported having pronto pups, funnel cakes & ice cream. We are going to Seafood Junction buffet in Byhalia for dinner Thurs. - anybody been there? Somebody once told me she loved to share food w/people who enjoy eating. My comment:
“Well, feast your eyes, honey!” :-)
