Dim sum dang good…

dim sum lobsterking.JPG

Been hearing loads of tasty feedback after my review in last Friday’s Memphis Playbook about Lobster King… in fact, talked a little bit about that — and other out of the way places — on FM 100 today.

What’s your favorite hidden gem? Maybe it’s too good to share… I understand.

By the way, speaking of places flying under the radar… I finally tried the challah bread at Ricki’s Cookies at the Eastgate Shopping Center (behind Fresh Market on White Station): Outstanding!!! And those namesake cookies? Couldn’t keep my hands off ‘em. When I was in a couple of weeks ago, she said she was adding coffee and some tables. Check it out.

Thanks to a tip from an Indian coworker, we found the best Pakistani / Indian food we have ever had. The catch is that the place, Shahi House, 662-890-5533 (I couldn’t find it listed anywhere.), is in the middle of nowhere. It’s in Barton, MS, on New Byhalia Road about 5 miles south of 385.

It is completely worth the trip though. We work close by so it isn’t bad for lunch. We plan on driving out from midtown this weekend.

I went to Ricki’s because of this blog on a Friday morning and the cookies looked sooo good as did the challah. Go early because they sell out quick, and bring cash or check - they don’t take cards. Go once to see, then be prepared to reserve your orders for pickup in the future since the best stuff is on the reserved table.

Ricki is a fireball of energy!
By the way, challah bread at Ricki’s is like half the price of that at the farmer’s market.

My friends, or enemies, PaulK & wife made french toast using challah bread and it was delicious.

Thanks for the heads up on the challah. Just ran over there and picked up a loaf. Now I know what I will make for dinner tonight. Breakfast!!!

Just saw an ad about Square Foods Natural Deli & Market reopening at 937 S. Cooper @ Young, phone 274-4222, hours Mon - Sat. 9 - 8 & Sun. 11 - 6. Please let us know when you’ve been & what you think about it.

Made a long-delayed trip to Sean’s Cafe on Union for lunch today. Ordered gyros & decided to be adventurous & try the birami that was one of the sides available, along with rice or fries. It was a good choice - chunks of potato cooked with pieces of zucchini, green pepper, onion, carrot, & a mildly spicy sauce. The meat for the gyros was thicker cut than most, although they were a bit sparing with the tzatziki. I would ask for more the next time. I have seen someone else refer to Sean’s (maybe Ginger?) on the blog. So others have already discovered it & gone back for more, as I will be doing.

My favorite hiden gem would be Casablanca Cafe on Young Ave just east of Cooper. For my money, it has the best lamb in the city (served as a rack marinated in mango sauce the last time I was there), and I’m very unforgiving of most restaurants’ approach to lamb. There’s also a huge vegetarian appetizer with a variety of tastes that make great counterpoints to each other—though I’d recommend sharing it among at least two people. The atmosphere is exotic, though not as charmingly so as at the former Morocco Cafe incarnation a few years ago.

Hi Carole,

I’ve definitely extolled the virtue’s of Sean’s Cafe on this blog before. It doesn’t have any atmosphere and sometimes there are too many smokers, but the food is delicious. I enjoy their gyros but my favorite by far is their chicken shewarma plate, with the rice, tabouleh, hummus, and then I always get the tzatziki sauce instead of tahineh sauce. Sorry I’m butchering the spelling. Anyway, try their chicken shewarma next time - YUM (their chicken sovlaki is boring!)

And their baklava is consistently pretty good, although some days it is much sweeter and juicer than others…so some days it is delicious, other days it is just okay.

I have tried Casablanca Cafe. The atmosphere is great, the decor is stunning, but the food in my opinion is twice as expensive and half as good as Sean’s. If they could put Sean’s food in Casablanca’s atmosphere it would make a killing.

The Mediterrean in that International Grocery store on Park was okay but Sean’s still wins. I want to hit Raffe’s deli on Poplar one of these days to see how they do.
