Off on a search for the best of the wurst

I’m headed to the Northwest, to Leavenworth, Washington, for a little family reunion. That tourist destination — a faux Bavarian Village — is sausage central… and I’m going to do a little field research on knackwurst, bratwurst and, my personal fave, weisswurst.

Stumbled across this wunderbar Web site while checking the spelling of those sausages. Anyone missing Erika’s might want to check out germandeli.com.

In the meantime, please feel free to weigh in with guest reviews… what’s the best meal you’ve had lately? Your new favorite cooking mag? A great wine buy? Will’s going to be moving the comments through the pipeline… don’t make me come back to an empty in box!!

The place you are going to reminds me of Helen, Georgia. It’s a small faux Bavarian village in northeast Georgia. I’ve only been once, but it was nice. I had wiener schnitzel for lunch and toured a model train replica of Germany. Not that I’m a nerd or anything. http://www.helenga.org/

Now if we could only find a good purveyor of wursts here in the Mid-South. With having only smoked sausage, bratwurst, Italain sausage and, of course, hot dogs, available it does get a little mundane.

Has anyone been to Dish since it changed chefs?

New favorite cooking mag: Penzeys One. Of course, it is also an advertising venue for their spice shop. But there are lots of good recipes from contributors & they always tell you which Penzeys spices & herbs to use. It’s a good education for those of us who like to experiment but don’t want a cabinet full of bottles & jars they’ll never use again. I like to buy Penzeys spices & herbs in small plastic bags & then transfer them into my own containers after I open the bags. If you haven’t been to their shop in the Carrefour, it’s a very interesting place to browse & most prices are competitive with brand name products in grocery stores.

I went to Mediterrean Food International Grocery on Park today. Close to Park & Highland, next to Captain D’s and across from the La Bamba restaurant.

I had never noticed it before and stopped on a whim. They serve pretty good Mediterrean food - I had their gyros plate since they were out of chicken shewarma, and it was pretty good. It came with rice, what I think was briami, and a garlic kind of dip. I also got a side of hummus which had a generous serving of olive oil on top. The food was good, I liked the pita bread - Sean’s Cafe still wins though. And the baklava was cold and soggy. Overall though, I’d eat there again. AND, of course, it is a grocery store with all sorts of exotic items - Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern. A good place to look for bizarre things. Or try new chocolates. Which is why I feel like I’m going to die right now, because I went on a try-way-too-many-different-chocolates in one sitting binge.

Try it out.

Just got back from the Viking Cooking School Lunch and Learn session. They have a beautiful facility and the lunch class was enjoyable. The chef made a Lemon Risotto with Summer Vegs. They give out the recipe along with a plate to taste.

Of course, there is a certain amount of ‘commercial’ to get you into the retail store and buy toys. Of which I did just that. I work right behind them and boy, am I in trouble now.

My favorite cooking rag has to be ‘Cooks Illustrated’. I love how they test out several techniques & use a tasting panel to decide which method tastes best.

I would like to carry out some expiraments like they do, but I cant see buying 25 chickens to roast.
