Notes, dashed on a cocktail napkin

I just came across a cocktail coaster from a recent trip to Louisville… Friend Jerry Slater had written a short list of his favorite Kentucky bourbons: Pappy Van Winkle, Russell’s Reserve, George T. Stugg, Blanton’s, and Woodford Reserve. The latter has made a bourbon believer out of me, with its seductive, smooth quality.

Besides Woodford, which I’ve purchased locally, are any of these available in/around M town?

Don’t miss my story in Friday’s Memphis Playbook on the best summer coolers.

Sorry, didn’t know you were doing coolers. This summer we’ve been enjoying Minute Maids Cherry Limeade. A splash of cherry limeade to top off your favorite champagne has proven to offer us relief from the summer sizzle.

Woodford and Blanton’s are the only 2 I’ve had. Both are really good, but not good enough to pay the upcharge over a Makers Mark. I like Jack too. After the first couple of sips, it really doesn’t matter…

I’m certain at least Blanton’s is available at your better liquor stores. Round bottle with a metal/pewter figure on top. Looks like a Christmas tree ornament, but much tastier.

I have seen all of these bourbons at Joe’s Wines on Poplar. Check it out.

You’re asking the right person. The best bourbon for the money is Buffalo Trace. The good folks at Joe’s Wine & Liquor introduced me to it. It’s a fairly new bourbon, but it has an excellent rich flavor and goes down smooth. The distillery was recently named “Distillery of the Year” by someone important. Give it a try, and you’ll be hooked.

I love the thought of tim’s Minute Maid Cherry Limeade. I can just taste Sonic cherry limeade with a splash of champagne on top. No, officer, I’m not drunk, this is just cherry limeade I’m drinking :-)

You can get about half of those at the liquor section of Costco, and the others at Buster’s, I’m sure.

I picked up a bottle of Prichard’s Double Barrel the other day–it’s a bit harsher than I expected given that it’s aged twice, and that I really like their rum.

This has little to do with the true topic here, but the title reminded me of a book I heard of once (1-2 yrs ago?) but never sought out. It was a compilation of notes found in bars, on the streets, randomly tossed into the wind. Many were the “meet me at 4PM” and “how could you do this to me” variety, but some were random thoughts, reminders or journal-like notes jotted down, perhaps on cocktail napkins, and then tossed… I thought it sounded like an interesting read but failed to follow through. Does anyone recall this book or something similar? Gee, now I’ll have to research this instead of getting some work done.
