OK, I don’t usually wade into sports, but cannot resist with the news that the feel-good story of the summer is suddenly stinking. Floyd Landis, this year’s Lance Armstrong, is being accused of using performance-enhancing drugs… he had high levels of testosterone after his amazing comeback after Stage 17.
He wondered yesterday if it might have had anything to do with a shot of Jack Daniels… his physician said he had read a scientific paper that alcohol can raise T levels…
Wondering how the marketing department at Brown-Forman might spin this revelation…
Floyd asked that we adhere to the innocent until proven guilty law of the land… OK, but what does your gut say? Innocent or guilty?

He has thought through this issue enough to deliberately give his doctor the attribute. If he’d said, “I googled up natural testosterone increase and found out that a shot of JD might legally bump me up a little” - I’d believe it. The clumsy window dressing around the statement adds a shade of falseness to it. Obviously it is impossible from this distance for us to know, but you are what you speak.

My vote depends on what I’ve read. The latest info I’ve put my hands on makes me think innocent. It’s apparently a new test that’s not been proven out very well. It’s actually a testosterone ratio to another bio-chemical. His testosterone was actually normal but the other was abnormally low. There have been a few A tests (initial tests) that have come back positive but the retests have come back negative. This was a little higher profile with Landis.
That said, I pretty much don’t trust the cyclists or the testing agencies. Just like I don’t trust baseball players, the players association or the League offices on pretty much anything either. I still love both sports.

Nobody ever accused me of being a sports fan, except when Tiger is on the greens. But I had to sympathize with Floyd when I read about his hip ailment. The man was doing well to get on the bike, much less win the thing, for crying out loud! I certainly hope he is completely exonerated. And if Jack Daniels was the cause, at least maybe it helped him get thru the whole ordeal.
