This just in…

Jim-n-Nick’s is coming to Memphis. This Birmingham, Alabama-based BBQ chain has locations throughout the South. Waiting to hear back on the details and will fill in the blanks ASAP.

A new fresh-Mex concept — Costa Vida — will debut in August, in the spot on Poplar where Fuego was supposed to go in, and also in Cordova, on Germantown Parkway. To check the menu: costavida.net. First one opened in Utah in 2003.

Saw a new steakhouse in Collierville: Grill 901, west of Byhalia on Poplar. From the same folks who have Fino Villa, Sopranos in Southaven and several La Hacienda restaurants, with an Indian restaurant in the works. Yes, the Taj Mahal is coming to Memphis!! Check out their lineup at pakmex.com

What else is new? Coming soon?

UPDATE… just heard the former owners of Cafe Samovar are now cooking at the Cottage Antique Mall on Summer, in the space that was once Cafe Eden.

Also, check the comments for more new developments. So many restaurants, not enough hours in the day, space in the tummy.

Have to love a fresh Mex place named “Coast Life” with no fish tacos… I’m underwhelmed at the menu, though I hope it makes Blue Coast pick up their game.

A place called Abbay’s is building right next to Jim-n-Nick’s on G’town Pkwy. Anyone have any idea what that is? Also, I noticed someplace called Hawaiian BBQ tucked in the shopping center beside the Malco in Cordova. I have no clue about it. Lots of new places; hope some of them are worth going back to!

Abbay’s is a take on the “meat ‘n three”. See Leslie’s post in December 2004 on the on in Olive Branch off Goodman road.

Wow, Jim and Nick’s closest location now is west Nashville. 7004 Charlotte Pike. I have a meeting in Nashville in the next two days…I’ll check it out to see if it is any good!

My in-laws are Nashvillians and Jim-n-Nick’s is one of their favorites. I’ve always really enjoyed it as well, but will not be making a special trip out to G’town Pkwy when Central BBQ is a mere six blocks from my house. That said, for those of you who will be going, try their interesting take on the cheese and sausage plate — the sausage seems homemade and the cheese part of the plate is a pimento cheese spread. Very tasty! Oh, and I recall that they have some kind of cheese biscuits/rolls that are wonderful.

I went to Jim-N-Nicks in Nashville today. The Pork Q and the Pork ribs are great. The baked beans have an oniony taste and they are very good. It will give Corky’s a run for the money when it opens in Memphis.

I rate Jim-n-Nicks with Sticky Fingers as tops among non Memphis BBQ chains.

I ate lunch with some of the Nashville locals at a popular local BBQ eatery near the meeting site. The name of the place is “Tex’s Famous BBQ, and it is at the corner of Murfreesboro Pile and Fessler’s Lane.

Nashville BBQ is wierd. I had a chopped Beef BBQ, the restaurant specialty. They put a pickle, relish and onion on top of the Q. There is no slaw.

The abscence of slaw is common. I’ve been to other Nashville establishments in the past, such as: Bar-Be-Cutie, Whitt’s and Jack’s with similar results, Lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, relish on BBQ.

If anyone goes to Nashville and has to order BBQ, then go to places with Memphis like BBQ like Corky’s or Neelys. Otherwise , All West-Tennesseans shoulf avoid Nashville local BBQ

Speaking of Sticky Fingers…why aren’t they moving into the Memphis market? Their BBQ sauce is available locally, & I hear from people in East TN that their BBQ is quite tasty. I intend to find out for myself the next time I’m over there.
