Smoke-free at Bari

Bari’s wine bar is now a no-smoking zone… I was in for dinner last night, and the dining room was empty at 8:30… but there were a few parties in the enoteca.

I’ve been exploring rose lately, there’s a whole crop of pretty pink wines that are crisp and dry. Tried a nice Italian rose at Bari last night, which worked swell with my clam linguine.

What’s your fave rose?

I absolutely love Robert Sinskey Vin Gris of Pinot Noir. The most elegant, beautiful domestic rose out there. But unfortunately it is extremely allocated and difficult to find in retail shops. Try Napa Cafe, they should have it on their list.

Another incredible rose is L’Instant Domaine du Fondreche from Southern France. Pick it up at Joe’s on Poplar.

Gargiulo Vineyards’ Rosato di Sangiovese is a great summer “sipper”. You might have trouble finding it, as its production is limited. I’d try Great Wines and Spirits, as I’ve found it there before.

Encore carries has the Sinskey Rose its not on the list but they have about 8 btls in house

We have been enjoying Rose’s a lot lately too. My favorite at the moment is Elk Cove Pinot Noir Rose from the Willamette Valley in OR. We have also tried a few Rhone Valley rose’s (their names I cant remember without my note pad) but they were excellent too.

Not a rose, but we have been enjoying Vinho Verdes too. We have only been able to find one producer (Broadbent) in Memphis, but hear Great Wines has a new one in. Vinho Verdes are the ultimate hot weather wine, IMHO. Crisp, some sparkle, tart & thirst quenching….best of all they are low alcohol, so when you finish a bottle, while sitting in the sprinkler, it doesn’t kick your ass.

It’s not a rose, but I did have one of the best wines I’ve ever tasted the other night at Napa Cafe. We ordered a bottle of Chateau Musar 1988. They had it on the list for $35!!!! This amazing Lebanese red was one of the most complex and earthy wines I’ve ever had. Ask for the decanter. Since it’s been locked up in the bottle for 18 years, it needs to be coaxed awake. How often do you see mature affordable red wines on wine lists?
