I’m a huge fan of Stax, especially the efforts to reach out to at-risk kids through the Stax Academy… last night, went to the Last Mondays series, which was packed for a performance by Toni Green. That lady can deliver… too bad they were having problems with the sound system!
The price of admission for these monthly concerts is $20 — or nada if you’re a member, and you really should be because it’s an important part of making this community a better place to live — and it includes appetizers from various vendors. Last night, it was wings from Gus’s downtown, and, man, those things disappeared quickly.
“If there’s better fried chicken on the planet, I don’t know where it is,” said Tim Sampson, thanking the restaurant for its contribution.
He also talked about the delegation of Stax Academy students heading to Italy to perform in the opening concert of the Porretta Soul Festival, this year honoring Otis Redding. Anybody have advice for these traveling teens? (My tip: there’s no such thing as too much pasta!) I’ll be happy to pass on the good words to the kids…

Always buy at least two servings of gelato. That’s why the good Lord gave you two hands.

The Stax students should:
(1) learn and use some basic words in Italian; and (2) eat and appreciate the wonderful food tha will be offered, understanding that the food in Poretta will likely be regional, meaning it will not be spaghetti and meatballs, which is more common to southern Italy frome which most Italian-American emigrated.
Ciao e grazie
