The trouble with take-out

I picked up a heart-healthy dinner at Miss Cordelia’s last night… grilled salmon with wasabi mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was in the cold case, and there were no reheat directions, so when I zapped it for two minutes, the fish got fried. It was way overcooked… and tasted fishy.

Might be a plan to include some guidance… and to cook fish/meat a little more toward medium rare, so it doesn’t get overheated.

I also noticed when I picked up a grilled mahi special from McEwen’s on Monroe, there was a 50 cent take-out charge. It was indeed a sturdy to-go container, but it just seems odd… you don’t pay extra for the use of a dish and the efforts of a dishwasher when you dine in, so why the charge…

What’s your favorite take-out place? Bonus points for describing the containers/menu in mouthwatering detail…

In reading your blog regarding “Take Out” I want to point out several restaurants that are a great example of how Take Out should be done.
Frank Grisanti’s along with both of the Bola Pastas have perfected “To Go”. It is quick & easy to pick up your order or if you are in their zip code you can have them deliver at a minumal charge…I have lived near two of the locations.
Everytime I have received delicious, hot meals that include bread, parmesan cheese, etc.

I love the new Pei Wei on Union. It’s perfect for take-out or dining in. I wish the sweet tea was better, though. A lot of good restaurants seem to be propping up around town. The Majestic Grille on Main has possibly the prettiest dining room in Memphis. The food is very good as well.

Lately the only take out we’ve done is Soul Fish. They do it well, though it wouldn’t be good if we weren’t able to eat it within 10 minutes of picking it up.

I’ve gotten tired of Blue Coast, but burritos are always good take out. Good chips too.

Other takeout places include Guadalupana and Tortugas, but make sure you get their recommendations for what can and can’t travel. Pepe will not let you take out the cheese…

Bosco’s has great takeout service, especially when it comes to containers. Large, sturdy plastic containers with clamshell closure. The crispy stuff stayed crispy, and they even packed the salad dressing on the side - of a Caesar salad - to prevent wilting (without it being requested). Nice touch!

India Palace does good takeout too. One of their full dinners would feed at least three people! And you get useful, reusable round plastic containers.

Cracker Barrel takeout containers are heavy black plastic with a clear plastic lid that closes tightly. They have sections that prevent foods from running all together. I haven’t had a single thing at Cracker Barrel that I didn’t like. Styrofoam takeout containers that have no sections in them are a pet peeve of mine - all the food runs together & it is just icky by the time you get it home.
