Slacker Central…

Went to check out the new High Point Coffee on Union this morning… and found the tables full of people taking up space. Kids, this ain’t no study hall.

If you’re going to sit there and pore over the books with your buds, at least buy a cup of coffee!! In some parts of the world, this is called loitering.

Of course, with the Starbuck-ification of the universe, people have started treating coffeehouses like their living rooms. Again, fine and dandy, as long as you’re a paying customer.

Do I sound cranky? Wait, let me take a sip of my joe… ahhhh, that’s better. I liked the coffee at High Point (though they were out of soy… because they’ve been so dang busy…), and the guys behind the counter were very nice. There’s another High Point (with a drive-through) at Poplar and Perkins Extended.

In other coffee news, SiP is now serving several flavors of smoothies, along with offering free wireless. This coffee spot is located on Madison at the Midtown Artist Market and is open Tuesday through Sunday.

Any other breaking brew news?

This isn’t breaking brews news, but I’m not sure where else to put it. I tried Pei Wei, the new “Asian Diner” in the same area as High Point Coffee, hence the connection between the two. It’s a chain and it’s loud, BUT they have brown rice, fast service, very nice staff, etc. You go in and order/pay, then sit down with a number and they bring your order to you quickly. You can find nutritional info at their website, peiwei.com…and the servings are big enough you can feed two people. I got the ginger chick brocolli with brown rice, and asked for it spicy. It was delicious and I had two meals out of it. So while I was skeptical of the place, I do recommend it in general - the brown rice won me over. ;)
Oh, sad brews news: I went to Deliberate Liberate recently and got an iced chai, and it was disgusting - the powder wasnt mixed in all the way, so there were clumps of powder all throughout the drunk. Truly revolting.

Good brews news: The green tea frappucino at Starbucks is yummy.

The End.

Over here off Tennessee I-40 (EXITS 80-82-83), we have been inundated with clones of Starbucks coffee.

My favorite is Green Mountain Coffee at a couple of local Exxon Stations. The Old Country Store has added and is serving Ugly Mug Coffee, which is pretty good. Books-a-Million has its Joe Muggs trying to pass off as good coffee.

The best place in Jackson for coffee is Season’s next to the movie “Hollywood Cinema”. btw, they have a chicken salad sanwich that is to die for there. I never thought of a coffee house as a place to eat, but Seasons is a place to eat.

We still have a Dunkin Doughnut here in Jackson and they have real good coffee. Usually Memphis friends want me to bring some with me when I go to Memphis.

What about all those places in Memphis, like Ben and Jerrys, that serve Ugly Mug Coffee. You ever get there to have a coffee and a side dish Cherry Garcia?

One rant, McDonalds changed their coffee to some undrinkable coffee. Mickey D used to have the smoothest coffee anywhere and at all MacD’s. Now it is undrinkable.

btw….Boy, you sure have a fun job sampling all that Q. You made me hungry enough to go to Scott’s later today in Lexington….

We’ve GOT to gritch about non-paying customers at High Point cause I think those are probably the same kids that helped Republic go out of business.

I heard Pei Wei is the poor man’s PF Chang — same owners. Don’t know if it’s true.

Don’t open a coffee shop near a college if you don’t want kids to use it as a study hall. College students are notoriously poor, and constantly in search of new study spots. I think it is to be expected…

Most of the students I know that study at Starbucks buy so much coffee there that the staff gives them a good discount.

If you don’t want young folks hangin’ around, you shouldn’t open up a coffee shop. By the way, Ugly Mug coffee is the best coffee I’ve ever had; if you haven’t tried it, you should.
