Lunch with the soaps

When I was in college, the noon hour was reserved for bagels and “All My Children” in the Student Union’s TV room. There was a weird sense of community as we ate and shared opinions about Erica’s latest antics or whether Tad and Dixie would finally get together.

Yesterday, I splurped a bowl of pho at My Thanh on Cleveland, near the old Sears, where the TV was tuned to “As the World Turns.” I was dining on my own, so it was welcome company.

Here’s what I’d love to learn… are there restaurants that get a soap-watching lunch crowd? Do tell… I might do a story if I hear about enough spots.

By the way, that noodle soup was fantastic… but I’m a little worried about that place. Since they put in a lunch buffet, I haven’t seen as big a crowd in there. Don’t let that keep you away!

First: Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mothers. We took my Mother and Dad to brunch today at a new place in Millington (where they live) called Christopher’s.

This is a brave attempt to bring upscale dining to an area largely known for it’s fast food and meat and three.

They’re brunch consisted of four breakfast selections, four sandwich selections and four entrees.

I will say for a place that has ‘roadhouse’ written all over it from the outside, the inside is very cozy and quaint.

Folks had the breakfast egg scrambler with egg and cheese. (6.00) Hubby tried the Eggs Ben. (8.00) Small fry, who couldn’t find a chicken strip on the menu (thank you) had the 12oz sirloin. (12.00) I opted for the Angus sirloin burger. (8.00)

So, the plateing was wonderful. The biscuits in a basket were accompanied by three lotus bowls of different jams. My burger was a bit dry and served on a nice artisian roll. Better if there had been more juices to soak the bread. Truthfully, I would have prefered a nice ’something’ salad. But there was nothing of the sort on the menu.

Hubby’s Eggs Ben looked good, but for my taste, the eggs were more hard poached, than soft. Small fry’s steak was cooked perfectally. However, I would think something other than their breakfast potatoes would accompany this steak entree. She even asked if she would get a vegetable.

Later, I did see some some great looking prime rib with a mashed potato/sauteed spinach come out of the kitchen. That would have seemed more appropriate with her steak.

For dessert we passed around a terrific chocolate thing called a “oeey gooey” something. Chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream and berries.

The Bloody Marys to start were the best part of the meal.

If any of you are traveling on the north end of Highway 51, I would recommend a stop and let us know what you think. They are new and trying to introduce something different to that part of Shelby County. Leslie? Something different to review. Their hours are Tues-Sat 5:00 - 9:00 and Sun 10:00 - 2:00

SIGLER

OH’ YES THERE IS A WORLD UP HERE IN NORTH WEST SHELBY COUNTY, AND PERHAPS A BETTER ATMOSPHERE THAN WHAT CAN BE FOUND IN REGIONS SOUTH OF MILLINGTON. THERE ARE SEVERAL AREA MILLINGTON RESTAURANTS THAT ARE WORTHY OF MUCH PRAISE AND ADORATION, AND AS FAR AS I AM CONCERENED THE LONGER WE KEEP OUT THOSE FROM OTHER PLACES THE BETTER OFF MILLINGTON WILL BE. NO ONE LOOKS DOWN THEIR NOSES AT YOU HERE LIKE IN OTHER PLACES IN THE COUNTY. THE RESTAURANTS ARE COMFORTABLE AND MEET THE NEED. NO “AIRS” HAVE TO BE PUT ON JUST ENJOY A NICE MEAL AND TRUE FAMILY TIME.
FOR “FAST” MEXICAN YOU CAN’T BEAT EL TORO ON 51 HWY. DON’T FORGET BROWNSTONE AND BBC JUST SOUTH OF THE CITY LIMITS ON 51 HWY
