TCB…

Did you hear about “American Idol” contestants in Memphis? Guess they’re doing an all-E show and going to tour Graceland…

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the random collection of bites I’m serving up… but I’m TCB… (as in Taking Care of Business… I know not everybody knows what that stands for…)

Cafe Society’s now serving Sunday brunch. (And if you don’t have your Mother’s Day Brunch reservations… no matter where you’re going… better get on the horn, pronto!)

Meditrina is now doing dinners… at 83 Union.

Washington Street Bistro in Collierville has changed up its menu. Oh, that Tandoori Crawfish pasta looks great! Call 901-850-1470 for reservations.

Heard there’s a new place in Collierville run by a chef from New Orleans, Pasta Italia… anybody been?

High Point Coffee has opened in Midtown… on Union.

Quetzal is going to add a pizza oven, and beef up its evening menu. It will also install a bar. You can order their outstanding coffee beans online at quetzalcoffee.com.

Just in time for prime grilling time, wine guru John Vego will give tasters the lowdown on 12 great wines for BBQ season from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at the Tower Room at the American Grille at Clark Tower, 5100 Poplar. It’s free!

Have a great weekend… I’ll be writing about my eating adventures in NYC!

While in Manhattan, you’ve got to check out Crush (crushwineco.com). It is an incredible little wine shop in Midtown. Drew Niepoorent (sp?) owns it. I picked up some killer little bottles when I was there last.

Quetzal is already serving pretty good drinks. Ihad a good martini and my wife had a HUGE bloody mary. A little too spicy by the end and it was so big we ended up sharing it. I’m looking forward to the pizzas.

Has anyone been to Blue Nile in Collierville? If so, your comments.

I had lunch at the new Garcia Wells Southwestern Grill today. While there are some kinks to work out, the place definitely has a lot of potential. They did a great job on the dining room. It’s both upscale yet casual and warm. The menu is an interesting mix of southwestern favorites and new takes on classics. With entrees below $10 and above $30, this is a rare place that caters to nearly any budget. The waitress steered us away from the fajitas, which she said were good “but just like everywhere else.” One dish we tried was the shrimp and grits, which could have been great but missed the mark. Maybe we are just used to the spicy New Orleans version, but we found them bland, especially the shrimp themselves. A little red pepper could have gone a long way. The barbeque quesadillas were the best I’ve ever had. The pescado, comprised of shaved smoked salmon on top a hash brown, was very good. However, I wasn’t sure I liked the combination of smoked salmon with the greasy hash brown. Service was good but needed some polishing, which is to be expected of a restaurant only open a few days. I’ll definitely be back, and I hope this place becomes a Memphis favorite.
