… was my touchstone my post-college, margarita-swilling years living in Grand Junction, Colorado. I was a parrothead before there was a name for that affliction, sticking paper umbrellas in my retro bouffant before going to see the perennially cheerful performer in concert.
I’m not sure why, but Jimmy and I have grown apart. Well, maybe it’s because he hasn’t put out an original album in decades. The oldies are still the goodies.
Can you guess where I’m going with this bout of nostalgia?
Last night, I had a margarita at the new Mexican restaurant in my hood, Las Margaritas on Union and McLean… and it was just fine. Sat out on the patio, which could use a few plants, but the music was cranked just enough to drown out the traffic on McLean… though not enough to muffle the shrieks of the kids running around. (Where’s my pocket Miss Manners when I need it? Excuse me, would you mind keeping your children under control?)
This trip was just a happy hour excursion, but I did like the chips and salsa… and the extras I ordered: good guacamole and pico de gallo.
Isn’t this the perfect weather to sit outside and have a cold, frosty drink? Where’s your favorite spot to sip a margarita? And, while we’re at it, what’s your favorite Jimmy Buffet song? (Put me down for “Pencil Thin Mustache” from A-1-A…. )

Lots of places in town make an adequate margarita–a couple of El Porton locations have a nice patio for relaxing outdoors; but nobody really makes it like we can at home. I guess it’s too easy to buy mix.
The secret? Zest. And lots of it.

Funny. I was thinking this morning about asking you to review Las Margaritas since it is in my neck of the woods, too. Are you planning on extending your next visit beyond happy hour for a full review? (Although sometimes why bother when the dippin’ and sippin’ is good?)

My favorite patio is the one at Cafe Ole. Nothing better than a pitcher of maragaritas under the oaks on a warm day. My second favorite is Boscos. They get props for high quality furniture (when will places like Central BBQ get that no one can sit at a picnic table for more than 15 minutes?). Joe’s Crabshack has the best view, but suffers from bad food, bad drinks, and bad furniture. When will someone open a good restaurant on the river? They’d make a forture.

I don’t drink margaritas but I’ll have a beer on Boscos patio any day!! Cafe Ole has a decent patio, but the chairs are often covered with bird poop and I’m not wild about their food. I wish more restaurants had patios away from the street. Celtic Crossing, The Bayou, Boscos…all on or near noisy, car-filled streets.

I agree about Joe’s Crab Shack - bad food, bad service and just plain overly gimmicky (which again is BAD!)
Anyone remember Captain Bilbo’s and how fun that place was??

The best margarita in Memphis is, hands-down, at Swanky’s Taco shop. I wish they had pitchers. My favorite margarita anywhere is at Fat Mamas Tamales in Natchez.

Absolute favorite is at Jimmy’s sister’s place, Lulu’s, in Gulf Shores. I like the margaritas at Cozymel’s but prefer the deck in my back yard for atmosphere. Favorite Jimmy Buffett song is Pirate looks at 40.

Fav Buffett tune — either L’Aire de la Louisiane, from Hot Water, or My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, and I Don’t Love Jesus, not that the tune is that great but the title is wonderful. Fav margarita — out of the blender on the balcony of a beachfront condo in Gulf Shores. (Agreed on Lulu’s, too!)

Favorite patio has to be El Porton on Highland. Spent many a lunch/dinner/closing time on that porch. And by far the best Buffett song is West Nashville.

Favorite Buffet tune, She’s Going Out of My Mind.
Favorite place for a Margharita was Landry’s Patio in Biloxi
