Joe Hayden sent me an email asking for suggestions of where to find deep dish pies in/around Memphis…
I’ve heard good things about Ace’s on Germantown Parkway, but have not been there… anybody care to weigh in on that place?
Any other spots that do a thicker crust?

I’ve been to Ace’s, and found it mediocre for Chicago pizza. Jimmy’s Dogs is great, but last I was there he still lacked the DEEP dish pizza for which Chicago is famous. Although I do recommend the Meats pizza there called the “meaty, beaty, big and bouncy” - a Who homage? as gyro meat on a pizza is awesome. A place lately I had lucky for good pizza has been Johnny Brusco’s. Their calzones are pretty good and garlic knots are awesome. Still, being from Chicago, I have yet to find anyplace down here close to that. And Exline’s is NOT close, it is horrid!

Ok, don’t hate me for bringing this up but just in case you haven’t done it before I would love to hear everyone’s suggestions for favorite THIN crusts around the area. I’m talking really thin and crispy, even cracker thin. (not thin crust from the national chain delivery people). Thanks!

Not a deep-dish fan (like the crust, but can’t take the swimming in sauce). However, I absolutely love Memphis Pizza Cafe. I can’t do delivery or national chains anymore. Also a fan of Fox Ridge - it reminds me of pizza from when I was a kid. They cut it into little square pieces and the cheese goes all the way to the edge. Yum. There’s one in the Hickory Hill area and one at Dexter and G’town roads.

I am originally from Chicago, and I LOVE Chicago deep dish pizza. Unfortunately, I have never found anything coming close to the “real” thing in Memphis. I went to the Williams Sanoma outlet last weekend, and came across a 14″ deep dish pizza pan AND it was on SALE. Of course, I bought it. I did some online research, and found a recipe from Pizzeria Uno’s…one of the original restaurants in Chicago serving deep dish pizza. I followed the recipe, and added a few ingredients I remebered from my childhood…good gosh - it turned out GREAT. Italian sausage, green pepper & onions with slices of mozzerella. You can’t find that kind of taste at any commercial joint in Memphis.

There is nothing here in Memphis that will touch Chicago style pizza. I went to Ace’s last weekend and I was very disapointed. Other guests were suggesting Memphis Pizza Cafe, don’t bother if you are specifically looking for Chicago style.

While New York style is my favorite, Chicago-style pizza offers something different and very satisfying. I’m amazed by the lack of a decent pizza parlor serving up Chicago style pizza. There is a Chicago-themed restaurant in Como, MS called Windy City Grill. I’ve never been there, but I here it is pretty popular. Como has a decent little strip of restaurants on its main street, attracting residents and NWCC students from neighboring Tate County, which is dry. I love The Como Steakhouse, but I’ve never made it to Windy City Grill. Anyone know if they have good Chicago pizza?

I’m not very familiar with Chicago-style pizza but… Memphis Pizza Cafe is my favorite pizza place…you can’t go wrong with any of their selections. I also like the pizzas at Boscos (great thin crust, Allie) but the choices are limited.

True Chicago style has the sauce on top, haven’t found that anywhere in Memphis. However, you can buy UNO’s (a chicago restaraunt) at Super Target in their cold “prepared” food section near the deli. It is excellent and is actually from a Chicago Pizza Place, never frozen.

The BEST thin crust pizza is a Brooklyn Bridge on Kirby Parkway. It is perfect!

I had to share my recent Chicago pizza experience. I just got back from California and while I was there I ate at Zachary’s Pizza in Oakland. It was the best Chicago deep dish pizza I have ever had! My family is huge on Chicago pizza and we have had Uno’s, Geno’s, etc. So if you are ever in Oakland (or Berkley) you must go.
