Despite the crazy drivers and the LA-esque traffic… had a mighty fine weekend in Miami.
Ate myself silly, couldn’t get enough plantains! However, nothing blew my knee-highs off… though there were a few memorable mouth fulls:
Eating a slice of Key Lime pie on a dock in Key Largo…
The increible ropa viejo (a savory beef stew) at Versailles, the most famous restaurant in Little Havanna…
A pastel pink mamey shake at the same restaurant… pictured here. Friend Holly could not get past its resembelence to Metamucil!
The perfect pig roast, outdoors at a wonderful wedding reception, the reason for our trip… The Cuban/Florida version of BBQ sauce was a dark, deeply flavored mole.
A blackened mahi mahi — which they call dolphin! — sandwich at a marina restaurant right on the water off the A-1-A, the two-lane highway that runs down to Key West.
Tapas and Argentinian red wine at a Uruguayan restaurant where we were the only English-speaking customers.
Grilled footlongs before the Saturday night kickball game that was part of the wedding festivities… no, I did not play kickball.
The outstanding to-go pastrami and corned beef plate from Jerry’s Famous Deli in South Beach… fixed sandwiches at the airport while waiting for our flight… They were soooo good. The meat was incredible, the bread sturdy and assertively rye… made me wonder again, why don’t we have a New York-style deli in Memphis?????

Why no NYC deli? Some have tried, all have failed. Heck we can’t even get good bagels in Memphis instead of those buns with holes in the middle (bungles seemes like an appropriate word for them). I’ve personally tried to get Fresh Market to stock something a little more bagelish but they say that’s not what people want. Oy.
Hey, isn’t that the same hair that’s in an article in the issue of Justine on the stands right now?

Looks good, but what IS a marney shake? And she has the most eclectic taste in rings, that girl. Love the eye.

Glad you got to eat at Versailles. I hope you got plenty of Cafe Cubano too.
I got a little whine though….I am loving the new CommercialAppeal.com layout, but there should be a link to your blog on the Food page. You really have to hunt for the link now. Just .02 cents from a designer.

The dolphin fish (gorgeous and fun to catch, btw) was renamed mahi mahi in most markets to avoid the association with eating Flipper.
And I do miss Blockman’s Deli. For me, it replaced the late B & S Restauraunt in Poplar Plaza where I learned to love corned beef and Matsa Ball soup as a kid.

The chicken livers at Versailles were good and worth ordering because they’re so rarely seen on a menu. The shakes were OK, too. But you’re right, the plantains… they must have been soaked in butter, or something, because they were sinfully good. Other highlight? The blender drinks on the beach…
