… shaved chocolate, to make gourmet cocoa?
… sichan peppercorns?
… a variety of desserts to go?
… goat meat?
(Got the answer to the last one… at a place called Pleasant View Meat Market on Mendenhall!! Who knew!??)
Curious epicures have been looking for obscure items and a few have called or emailed me recently… in some parts of the world, there are people paid to forage for new/strange/interesting edibles… I’d like that job, if I had a private jet to fly me to Alaska/Thailand/whereever…
Here’s what I’ve been hunting for… Dungeness crab. We have a Christmas eve tradition of sitting around and cracking this sweet shellfish, but this year, we’re staying in Memphis. I guess I could order it online, but it might be cheaper to fly to Seattle and bring some back. (That’s why I need that private jet!)

Wrong…. Oriental Best on Ridgeway now carries live dungeness. They were less that $5.00 a pound the other day when I was in there. And we are coming to your house for Christmas eve.
As to the Sichuan peppercorns, I remember reading that there was an import quota, which was going to make them scare in the States.
And the market on South Mendenhal is called Pleasant View and their sign says that they are selling “Halal”, which is the Muslim equivalent of “Kosher”.

Alton Brown just did a special on crabs. According to him, the frozen crab is just almost quite as good as live crabs. His method of cooking it was to wrap it in wet paper towels and saran wrap and microwave it. Apparently that steams the crab and keeps from overcooking it (unlike boiling). However, I find that crab cooked anywhere besides Louisiana is too bland, so I have to boil them myself to get the desired level of spiciness. I’ve ordered seafood from the grocery store before. Ask the seafood guy at Shnuck’s if he can put in an order for you. That will be the cheapest way to go. Also, that international market at Winchester and Hickory Hill has any seafood you can imagine. I’d bet they have live crabs.

Alton also said that fresh crab should be kept no longer than 24 hours before it is eaten. If it is going to be longer, buy frozen and keep it in the freezer.

I bought Sichuan peppercorns at the vietnamese market on Cleveland (Viet Hoa, I think). I used it to make a baharat (sp?) spice mixture for rice dishes and slow cooked lamb. Forget the shaved chocolate, instead get Valrhona cocoa powder at Mantia’s.

Having had a reaction to Dungeness crabmeat & ending up in the hospital emergency room in Renton, WA, on vacation in Seattle, I have since shied away from the stuff. However, they used to have it at Seessels sometimes. I’m sure Schnucks would be glad to order it for you if the other source happens to have a run on it now that you have brought it up…
