Wood pile out back by the smokehouse is the first sign that something’s going to be good. Then, there’s all those pickups out front at Craig’s BBQ in DeValls Bluff, Ark., about an hour west of Memphis. (Take the Briscoe exit, follow the signs and look for the smoke.)
The sandwiches are thick and messy and have the best slaw, sweet with shredded apples. They have ribs and other items, too, but why would you pass up the best sandwich in the universe? (Barbecue buddy Dave Darnell turned me on to this hot spot, naturally. He has been known to run over there for lunch every now and then.)
What’s the farthest you would travel for destination dining?

Man Leslie, you have a dream job driving from Lexington to DeVall’s Bluff eating BBQ Nearly a 120 mile radius around Memphis, and you ask me (and the rest of us) how far I would go for destination dining!?!?!?!?
Actually (this is @10 years ago), I planned on attending a workshop in Louisville KY so I could go to one of the Last Blue Boar Cafeterias. This Cafeteria was the same owners as the Old Britlings Cafeteria Chain in the Memphis area. I wanted that Britlings signature Chess Pie just one more time! WHen I got there, I skipped a meeting session (there is a room in meeting hell for me for doing that) to eat a piece of pie from Blue Boar. It was the same Chess Pie recipe. It tasted just like the Britling version and that pie is the best one of all the chess pies anywhere. I hope someone else remembers the pie at Briitlings like I do.
It was worth the drive and the meeting for the slice of pie!
Leslie, Any chance you have the recipe in your
recipe finder newspaper column?
Thanks for the posting. You know I thought I was crazy to drive to all these little hole-in-the-wall eating places. I’m glad to know I am quite sane!
Now if we could only get that good Frostop root beer or that great Sir Pizza in Memphis again!!!!! Oh well, another trip is a possibility.

Oh my goodness, that chess pie is absolutely the best, richest, melt-in-your-mouth tummy treat ever!! As a native Memphian, I do remember Britlings and their pies!! There was one on Summer Ave, right??

there may have been a Britlings on Summer but you might be remembering the old Mark Twain cafeteria in Summer Center. I must have gone there a million Sundays for lunch in the 50’s and 60’s. The cool part was the cream that came with our parents’ coffees was in little glass containers and my brother and I got to drink ‘em.

Britlings was THE cafeteria in Memphis 45 years ago.
There were two Britlings downtown (the one I remember next to the Loews on Union with a super looking balcony)and one at Poplar Highland Plaza and another at Laurelwood Shopping Center.
In the last days of the Cafeteria chain, they developed the Britlings Buffet and had locations in Frayser, Raliegh, Whitehaven and converted the Cafeteria at Poplar Highland to a Buffet.
The also opened an upscale Britlings Lobster Feast in Clark Towers for a few years.
The parent company (alternately known as BLB and Blue Boar) of Britlings has Blue Boars in the midwest, Britlings in the Mid-south and B & S cafeterias in Nashville.
They had the best deserts anywhere! The Chess Pie was Britlings signature desert.
Anybody know the recipe for the great Britlings Chess Pie?
