Have some family in town, my ‘que loving nephew… so we went to Payne’s yesterday for lunch… and the sandwich was extra good… I asked why and Miss Flora said it was probably because she could take her time… that place has been busy every time I’ve been in there lately, but it was a little quiet yesterday…
My nephew liked the sandwich — though he wished he would have gone for the slaw on it — but he loved the fried peach pie… he had never a fried pie in his life! Those are the best I’ve tasted.
For dinner, we went to Central BBQ and he had ribs. I had the great portobello mushroom sandwich and some of those killer chips.
Today, I’m taking him for another first: He had never heard of a po’ boy! (It’s all part of my not-so-secret plan to get him to move here…) We’re going to Bluff City Bayou…
Speaking of things that remind me of New Orleans: Just had a great interview with chef John Besh, who has the outstanding August in the Crescent City… has been reopen for two months and had encouraging things to say about things picking up down there. He’s in Memphis/Tunica for an event at Horseshoe Casino, where he is a consultant at N’Awlins… Anybody eaten there? Any good?

Has your nephew had grits? Fried green tomatoes? “Real” fried okra (rolled in mixture of flour/cornmeal & fried in a cast iron skillet)? Oh, the possibilities!!!

‘Nawlins is ok. Not nearly as good as August. When will we get to read your interview w/ him?? Love to hear the good news from NOLA.

Another place to take your nephew is Lambert’s in Sikeston. In Jackson TN, its Old Country Store, and in Sikeston, Its Lamberts.
Lamberts is Home of the “Throwed Roll”. Its a hoot and a half!
You order the food, and while you are waiting, they bring food around for you to sample: Fried Okra, Fried Green Tomato, etc..
I won’t spoil the suprise (for you or him) by disclosing the unique concept of “The Throwed Roll”, but he will love it (so will you)! Food isn’t as good there as it once was, but its adequate in spite of often rushing the cooking of the veggies.

Take hin to Jackson Tn to the Old Country Store. Breafast and lunch are both GREAT! The food has improved considerably with management changes, plus they have added a takeout area that resembles the old location across from the late (you guessed it) Kelly Foods plant(the now closed makers of the canned chilli, potted meats, Brunswick Stew). Thename has been bought and Vietti Foods (another canned chilli, etc company)of Nashville will return the all so famous Kelly name to the stores soon.
Breakfast has those great pancakes and hot syrup, red eye gravy, grits, real country ham, and Fried Balogna among the normal breakfast buffet.
Lunch has the Fried Griddle Cake Cornbread, fried green tomatos, fried Okra, seasoned beans, Greens (usually two types), and a bunch of other southern specialties.
Now stop by the takeout for that imported (all the way from Memphis) Ugly Mug coffee and homemade fudge to ward off the sleepies (while you walk around Casey Jones Village) or sit in the rocking chair after a THE meal.
Its a great atmosphere for the city boy to visit in the south.
Keep collecting those college catalogs and applications, Auntie Leslie (see we’re already making you southern)! You will have family moving to Memphis very very soon!

FYI, Lambert’s, Home of the Throwed Roll, is in Sikeston, MO., right off the highway. Its good food and fun atmosphere all rolled up into one. The place is always packed with folks (and tour buses of folks) but the wait isn’t normally too long.

Steph,
DOn’t give away the secret of the “Throwed Roll” otherwise the fun of stopping there and tasting the rolls for the first time will be lost!

The Ole Feed House in Marion is EXCELLENT, though not as kitchy as Lambert’s, and it’s a WHOLE lot closer. You won’t be sorry…
