My buddy’s coming for a visit and we’re going to hit the usual tourist spots. Here’s the challenge: He’s a vegetarian, so fried chicken and barbecue will not be on our plate…

Where should we explore some meatless menus that still say Memphis?

Several restaurants have good veggie plates, Bryants has the biscuits to die for, Bosco’s offers one or two meatless pizzas and a great portobella sandwich (I love that place).
PF Changs doesn’t “scream” Memphis but they have several delicious vegetarian offerings as does Bhan Thai. I’m sure someone, somewhere could come up with a delicious BBQ Tofu dish…or polenta.

The problem with Memphis and a true vegan is simply the Southern Seasoning of vegtables with Meat by products.

I would simply call ahead before visiting anyplace and make sure the place of business offers true vegan dishes.

The turnip greens at Little Tea Shop should be ok since they’re cooked witout pork. There should be at least a couple of pork-free vegetables to round out that meal. That comes close to the classic Meat and Three experience.

It’s not Memphis but we hit Saigon Le at least once a week and they have lots of wonderful totally vegan dishes.

Love the BBQ salad at Central BBQ. He could ask them to hold the BBQ and crumble those incredible potato chips on top. If he eats dairy they could add extra cheese and you could take a couple of boiled eggs with you. The BBQ Ceasar is worth the experience.

You can get a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich at The Arcade. Call to make sure they kept it beyond dead Elvis week. Just say no to their “canned” plate lunch….or their commercial biscuits and gravy.

Explain to him what he’s missing out on and try to convert him.
